Netflix recently unveiled a farewell trailer for “Squid Game,” wrapping up the storyline of the original Korean series after its Season 3 finale. This video signifies the conclusion of the primary narrative, yet leaves room for speculation about an anticipated American adaptation.
Squid Game’s Goodbye trailer might mean there’s no American spin-off
The “Farewell” teaser for Squid Game, unveiled by Netflix on July 16, 2025, has sparked discussions about potential developments within the series.
The one-minute video showcases important scenes from the series and indicates that the original Korean version has ended. Its caption says, “Game over. Thank you for playing. Squid Game, all episodes now available on Netflix.” The trailer gives a final and solemn feeling, which could make it harder to generate excitement for the rumored American adaptation.
In the final episode, Cate Blanchett made a short appearance as an American recruiter. This scene led to speculation about potential future installments, but the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, clarified that he did not intend for the ending to set up a new series. He told The Hollywood Reporter that the cameo was symbolic, serving to underscore the ongoing issue of systemic exploitation rather than hinting at more stories.
It was mentioned before that David Fincher might direct an English version of Squid Game, but Netflix hasn’t made any formal announcement yet. In fact, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk stated he hasn’t been contacted about this project personally. Although Hwang is open to the idea of a Fincher adaptation, he clarified that the main storyline of Squid Game has already come to an end.
Based on the trailer’s ending and Hwang’s comments, there appears to be uncertainty about the imminent creation of an American version. Since the Korean storyline has concluded and no spin-off has been announced yet, the trailer might suggest that any further developments could encounter creative and practical obstacles. At this moment, it seems that Squid Game may have reached its conclusion, despite its worldwide popularity and fans’ calls for more episodes.
