In 2023, the well-respected filmmaker became involved with a Netflix production that’s adapted from the timeless book series The Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis. According to reports, Gerwig’s adaptation is anticipated to have a substantial budget and as of now, the actors who will bring Narnia to life are still under wraps.
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia to release in IMAX on Thanksgiving Day 2026
As per a report from Puck News, it’s been scheduled that Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia will be released in the year 2026, as part of an agreement she has struck with Netflix.
Matthew Bellon, partner at Puck News, revealed that co-CEO of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, intends to showcase Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Narnia in theaters. He shared, “Netflix plans to debut this film across approximately 1,000 IMAX screens globally on Thanksgiving Day 2026, and it won’t be available on Netflix until Christmas.
As a gamer, I’m super excited about the upcoming release of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia on IMAX! Initially, it was only slated for a two-week run, but if the demand keeps growing, we might just get to enjoy it for longer. Once its stint on the giant screens is over, this masterpiece will make its way to regular cinemas for another four weeks before finding its home on Netflix streaming service. Can’t wait!
Additionally, this groundbreaking agreement between Gerwig and Netflix has afforded the opportunity for Narnia to premiere in theaters across 90 nations. In a manner reminiscent of Netflix’s other productions such as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and The Irishman, Gerwig’s Narnia film will initially hit the big screen rather than debuting on streaming platforms first.
In February 2024, Gerwig had a chat with Collider and disclosed that she had been developing the Narnia film prior to Barbie’s production. She expressed, “Having established the foundation for Narnia and wishing to revisit it – that might have been something I subconsciously arranged.
