As a film enthusiast with a heart as wide as the silver screen and a soft spot for heart-wrenching documentaries, I must say that “Daughters” has left me utterly spellbound. Having had my fair share of tears shed over movies, this one managed to tug at my heartstrings in ways I never thought possible.
The film titled “Daughters” debuted on Netflix on August 14th, and it’s been praised by critics with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Many have described it as one of the most emotionally impactful documentaries of the year.
A Special Daddy Daughter Dance
The documentary follows four young girls preparing for a special Daddy Daughter Dance with their fathers. The twist is that their fathers are in prison, and the dance is being held as part of a unique fatherhood program in a Washington, D.C. jail.
The storyline seems akin to an intense emotional ride through various ups and downs, and it appears that this consensus is shared by the critics. Adam Kempenaar awarded a perfect Tomatometer rating of 100%.
It captures the healing and heartbreak.
Variety gave the movie 9/10 and were also surprised by how strong it is:
The film is rife with visually lyrical moments that connect viewers with the young ones’ sorrows, fears, insights and hopes.
Could this be an Academy Award contender? I’d recommend taking a look for yourself, but remember to keep some tissues handy; it’s quite emotional.
