As a die-hard fan of Stranger Things, I can’t help but feel both excited and frustrated at the same time. The confirmation from Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos that Stranger Things season 5 is coming in 2025 brings a sense of relief after months of speculation and uncertainty. However, the long wait has left me feeling like I’ve been on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
I’ve been eagerly waiting for the fifth season of “Stranger Things” on Netflix, and while we’ve all accepted that it won’t drop in 2024, it’s exciting to finally have an confirmed release year from the streaming platform itself.
At the Q2 Netflix earnings conference, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos announced that “Stranger Things” will be released with a new season in the year 2025.
Towards the end of the call, Sarandos shared some exciting updates about returning Netflix shows in 2024 such as “The Lincoln Lawyer,” “Virgin River,” and “Squid Game,” among others. He then hinted at an intriguing lineup of new shows coming in 2025, including the highly-anticipated fifth season of “Stranger Things.”
Looking forward through 2025, you’ve got new seasons of Wednesday, Stranger Things, and The Night Agent. And, we’re in production on One Piece, so there’s a ton of excitement there just in our series.
For devoted fans of “Stranger Things,” this news might not be shocking. According to Deadline, Netflix had plans to release the show’s fifth season in 2025 as early as February 2024. However, following the writers’ and actors’ strikes in May 2023 that halted production, which was initially slated to start then, it became apparent that fans would have a lengthy wait before they could watch the new season.
In early 2024, we began filming the last season, number five, starting in January. The team has put in considerable effort throughout the year to bring this final installment to life.
In July 2024, Ross Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, posted a photo and video from the set of season 5 on social media. He revealed that they had completed 24 weeks of production, meaning they had reached the halfway point in filming the new season.
As scribes, we may not be numeracy whizzes, but we can handle a spot of simple arithmetic. If the production team for “Stranger Things” season 5 is halfway through shooting in July, then they’re projected to finish around mid-December. After that, it’s on to post-production.
It’s clear that Sarandos hasn’t announced a specific release date for “Stranger Things” season 5 yet. However, there’s a strong possibility that we might find out the release window towards the end of this year. Based on previous patterns, it seems likely that the new season will be released in the summer of 2025. Netflix has a tendency to debut “Stranger Things” seasons during this timeframe, with three out of the four seasons being premiered in the summer months. Therefore, we can anticipate watching “Stranger Things” season 5 on Netflix around July next year.
