Netflix Anime Breach: How Many Series Were Leaked Online?

As a dedicated gamer and anime enthusiast with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the entertainment industry. However, this recent Netflix anime breach has left even this old-timer feeling a tad disheartened.

Netflix, a widely-used streaming service, has experienced one of the largest anime leak incidents in history on August 6, 2024. On this day, several upcoming anime productions, such as Dan Da Dan and Terminator Zero, were prematurely released. Of these, Dan Da Dan created quite a commotion since it was leaked more than two months ahead of its official release date. While leaks of shows are not unusual, Netflix faced the leak of four eagerly anticipated anime projects in this instance.

Everything we know about the Netflix anime breach

Previously noted, Netflix encountered a significant breach of anime content, encompassing series and films such as Dan Da Dan, Terminator Zero, Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain, and Ranma 1/2. Leaks of this nature are infrequent, but what makes this case unique is that an entire season’s worth of a show has been illegally distributed.

As a long-time anime enthusiast who has spent countless hours watching and appreciating this unique form of entertainment, I find it disheartening to witness the frequent leaks of popular anime series before their official release dates. Having grown up in a time when waiting for the next episode or season was an exciting anticipation rather than a frustration due to online piracy, I can’t help but feel that the convenience offered by these leaks comes at a cost.

Although news can influence fans, it significantly affects those who have labored hard behind the scenes as creators and rights holders. Notably, Dan Da Dan was set for its English dub premiere at Anime NYC on August 24. Moreover, the Asian theatrical release of the anime’s first three episodes is slated to commence on August 31.

Although Netflix experienced the most significant impact due to anime leaks, it’s important to note that Crunchyroll wasn’t immune either. In fact, an early release of Re:Zero season 3 episode 1 occurred on Crunchyroll as well.
