According to Billboard, Nelly was apprehended at a casino due to an outstanding warrant connected to an insurance matter from the past. After being arrested, he was transported to the Maryland Heights Police Station, but later freed.

Law enforcement officials from the Missouri State Highway Patrol discovered that rap artist Nelly had an outstanding warrant following a prior traffic incident where he was allegedly driving without insurance. A subsequent investigation, including a background check and search, uncovered four ecstasy tablets in his possession according to reports.

Nelly’s legal team has refuted the drug possession allegations. In a comment to Billboard, attorney Scott Rosenblum asserted that an overzealous officer wrongly targeted Nelly. He explained, “Mr. Haynes was not indicted for drug possession; he was apprehended due to a ‘No Proof of Insurance’ violation from 2018, stemming from a warrant issued in December 2023 that he did not receive notice of. Mr. Haynes was unfairly singled out by an overzealous officer.”

Rosenblum stated that after repeatedly winning big at the casino, the officer decided to conduct an unnecessary background investigation instead of simply facilitating the transfer of Mr. Haynes’ winnings. In his words, “Rather than just overseeing the distribution of Mr. Haynes’ prizes, this officer felt it was essential to perform an unwarranted warrant check. The officer told Mr. Haynes that a background check is required when a player wins a certain amount; however, Mr. Haynes was aware that this was not accurate, as he had won numerous jackpots for the same or larger amounts.”

Lawyer Rosenblum stated that the investigation of Nelly was carried out without a valid reason, supposedly uncovering ecstasy as a result. He argued, “It’s crucial to remember that Mr. Haynes, due to travel regulations, is frequently asked to present documentation showing no outstanding warrants or FBI checks. None were found in this instance. I am absolutely certain this case will not proceed, and we will be requesting an investigation into the officer’s behavior.”
