Need for Speed franchise put on hold as Criterion Games works on Battlefield

Apart from gaining insights into Battlefield Labs today, we also discovered that Battlefield Studios plans to unite several EA developers to develop the next game. Notably, among them is Criterion Games, known for creating Need for Speed. They released Need for Speed Unbound in 2022 and have been relatively quiet about it since then, except for acknowledging the series’ 30th anniversary. Given this, it’s not unexpected that Need for Speed has taken a back seat temporarily while Criterion contributes to Battlefield. However, Battlefield’s lead Vince Zampella confirmed that Criterion is currently brainstorming new concepts.

This week, I shared my thoughts on the future of Need for Speed with Eurogamer, and I wanted to reassure our dedicated fanbase that the inclusion of Criterion Games in Battlefield Studios doesn’t signal the end of the road for our beloved racing sim.

It seems that we won’t be getting a new Need for Speed game anytime soon, not until significant development has been done on the next Battlefield title. Criterion, the team behind Need for Speed, started collaborating on Battlefield in 2023, following the launch and maintenance of Need for Speed Unbound in 2022. Since then, they’ve been working together to create new experiences for Battlefield and offering support for its multiplayer aspects as well.

As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly awaiting the comeback of Need for Speed, but it seems we’ll have to be patient. Keep your eyes glued to Shacknews for fresh tidbits about the franchise, as we unravel what’s in store for Battlefield next.
