NCIS: Hawaii the Final Season DVD is the last chance to enjoy the show

As a dedicated fan who’s been sailing the waters of NCIS since its inception, I must say that acquiring the final season of NCIS: Hawaii feels like finding a rare sea turtle amidst the waves. It’s both exciting and heartbreaking, much like discovering an uncharted island only to learn it’s off-limits due to some pesky network decisions.

NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 is now on DVD, so is it worth getting the final year for the spinoff?

Each television season has its fair share of cancellations, but one often triggers a massive wave of discontent and uproar among fans. In 2024, that unfortunate cancellation was none other than NCIS: Hawaii, leaving many stunned as CBS decided to terminate the series after just three seasons.

Dropping any spinoff from the CBS franchise would be quite unexpected. But, cancelling NCIS: Hawaii after just three seasons seems illogical. The show was still performing well in terms of ratings and the producers were taken aback as they had left off on a cliffhanger, which was intended to lead into a bigger season 4. It’s even more aggravating considering that the season had been postponed due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, so fans didn’t even get a full year of new episodes.

Now, the entire season is on DVD, so is it worth getting for fans?

NCIS: Hawaii Season 3 overview

The new season begins as Jane Tennant, played by Vanessa Lachey, comes back to work following Season 2’s events. To her surprise, Sam Hanna (LL Cool J), an agent from NCIS: Los Angeles, is now stationed in Hawaii. This situation establishes a lasting storyline where Tennant becomes suspicious of Hanna, trying to uncover any hidden intentions he might have.

The interaction between LL Cool J as Sam and Tennant’s initial skepticism transforming into admiration adds a lively element to the series. However, due to its short length of ten episodes, it may not fully deliver the typical depth expected for character development. Nevertheless, there are compelling moments, such as Jesse (Noah Mills) unexpectedly forming a strong connection with Sam.

In some instances, certain episodes offer amusing content, such as the one where Lucy (Yasmine Al-Bustami) and Kate (Tori Anderson) pose as guests at a resort to present their relationship. Meanwhile, there’s an episode with a suspenseful plotline involving a murderer lurking in a forest. On the other hand, a more playful episode centers around Sam becoming agitated by burglars donning clown masks.

The final episodes form a dual narrative that places the team in critical peril, culminating in a significant conclusion. However, this setup leaves the audience feeling frustrated because the brevity of the season doesn’t allow enough time to explore other characters, with an excessive emphasis on Sam’s introduction. Despite having a solid supporting cast, humor, and action, it’s clear that the writers were saving up for Season 4 storylines, which unfortunately won’t materialize.

It’s unfortunate that NCIS: Hawaii, which should have had a longer run, only lasted for three seasons. It’s a shame that the series, which captivated viewers, was cut short and ended prematurely, leaving fans wishing they could have said goodbye to it later.

The “Final Season” DVD collection contains the last ten episodes of the show, distributed over three discs. In addition to a funny blooper reel, there are only two extra features. One is titled “Rauh’s Directing Guidelines: NCIS and NCIS: Hawaii,” which delves into Daniela Rauh (previously seen as Kenzi on NCIS: Los Angeles) directing episodes for both series.

It’s a fun bit with producer Stephen Binder saying, “It’s like the cousin you haven’t seen in a while coming back.” Rauh talks about how odd it felt to come back without acting and the challenges of filming in Hawaii and D.C. rather than L.A. Naturally, she and LL Cool J get along well and it’s fun seeing Rauh behind the camera.

Speaking as an avid fan, I’m eagerly looking forward to the upcoming season of “NCIS: Hawaii” – Season 3, aptly titled “The Third Wave.” This season promises a fascinating exploration, particularly centered around the introduction of Sam Hanna and the unique energy he brings, as depicted in a heartwarming Hawaiian welcome ceremony on set.

This collection is generally well-rounded, but it serves as a painful reminder of how abruptly NCIS: Hawaii was concluded, which feels unfortunate given that this smaller set marks the conclusion of an entertaining spinoff. It’s worth purchasing for fans due to its additional content, but it’s a bittersweet moment seeing it come to an end so quickly.
