NBC's Brilliant Minds has a star-studded guest cast (3 new roles revealed!)

As a dedicated gamer and television enthusiast with a soft spot for medical dramas, I can’t help but be excited about NBC’s upcoming series, Brilliant Minds. The show’s impressive cast additions, led by former Heroes star Zachary Quinto as neurologist Oliver Sacks, have piqued my interest.

NBC’s “Brilliant Minds” is attracting some excellent guest stars for its upcoming medical drama series. Find out which celebrities will make an appearance!

During the upcoming fall television lineup, networks are introducing fewer new shows than normal due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes. An exception to this trend is NBC’s “Brilliant Minds,” where Zachary Quinto, a former “Heroes” star, returns to portray Oliver Sacks – a groundbreaking neurologist collaborating with his team on investigating mental health conditions.

The series is inspired by the true story of Dr. Sacks, a celebrated surgeon who died in 2015. Known for his groundbreaking research on brain disorders, his works “Awakenings” and “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat,” as well as “An Anthropologist on Mars,” served as the foundation for this show.

NBC has shown great enthusiasm for the series, officially commissioning a full 13-episode season in early 2024. The show will feature acting talents including John Quinto, Aury Krebs, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alexander MacNicoll, Spence Moore II, Donna Murphy, Tamberla Perry, and Teddy Sears.

Now we know the show will have some big guest stars on board, too.

Who is guest-starring on Brilliant Minds?

During the NBCUniversal Television Critics Association summer press tour, creator Michael Grassi unveiled some intriguing additions to the cast at the event. Steve Howey, Mandy Patinkin, and André De Shields were among those named. “This season boasts some remarkable guest stars,” Grassi hinted, leaving us eagerly anticipating potential further announcements.

In the initial episode, De Shields is portrayed as a person living with Alzheimer’s. This talented actor has left indelible marks on Broadway with his creation of the Wizard character in “The Wiz,” and he was awarded a Tony Award for his performance in “Hadestown.” He also claimed an Emmy for his role in a NBC production of “Ain’t Misbehavin’.” More recently, he graced the screens on CBS with his appearance in “Elsbeth.”

Later in the season, Howey is set to make a guest appearance as a member of a biker gang seeking Dr. Wolf’s help. He is recognized for his roles on the WB/CW sitcom “Reba” and Showtime’s “Shameless.” Most recently, Howey featured in the short-lived CBS action show “True Lies.”

Patinkin is set to make an appearance in at least two episodes at Bronx General, portraying the role of a family doctor. Known for his exceptional work in “The Princess Bride” and his impressive TV resume, which boasts shows like “Chicago Hope,” “Criminal Minds,” “Homeland,” and “Death and Other Details,” among others, Patinkin’s career has earned him an Emmy Award, a Tony Award, and additional accolades.

The series appears to follow a common medical drama format, featuring a “case-of-the-week” where Sacks and his team work diligently to save a patient in crisis. This setup invites an array of guest stars, adding intrigue. If the acting skills of the remaining guest cast can rival that of the three leads, then Brilliant Minds promises to be a fantastic new show gracing NBC’s autumn schedule!

Brilliant Minds premieres Monday, Sept. 23 at 10/9c on NBC.
