As a gamer who grew up in the golden age of television sitcoms, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia hearing about the return of “Malcolm in the Middle.” Like many, I was one of those fans who didn’t realize the Wilkerson family had a last name until that deleted scene from season one. The memory of their chaotic yet heartwarming antics still brings a smile to my face.
I’m overjoyed to share that Disney+ is bringing back the beloved family sitcom for a four-episode limited series next January, marking the 25th anniversary of its original debut on FOX! As a diehard “Wilkerson” clan fan, this news has me beaming from ear to ear – even those who weren’t aware that Malcolm and his kin bore a surname. (It was unveiled in a deleted scene from season one!) Check it out for yourself here.
It’s being whispered that the revival of “Malcolm in the Middle” will center around Hal (Bryan Cranston before his ‘Breaking Bad’ days) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek) celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), along with his yet-to-be-cast wife and daughter, are expected to attend. It seems fitting for all the Wilkerson children to be present. However, there’s no news on whether Christopher Masterson (the eldest son Francis), Justin Berfield (middle child Reece), or Erik Per Sullivan (youngest son Dewey) will make an appearance. There are rumors that Jamie might be recast.
It seems unlikely that Dewey will be present this time around, given that Erik Per Sullivan hasn’t attended any prior reunions. It’s a pity because Dewey’s everyday brilliance and spontaneous demonstrations of mind-bending intelligence were some of the most cherished moments for fans.
Securing Cranston, Muniz, and Kaczmarek for a limited series is an impressive move by Disney+, who is well-versed in scoring notable acting talent. Shows like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Loki prove that even highly acclaimed, in-demand actors will participate in TV projects if the storyline captivates them sufficiently.
In other words, Frankie Muniz mentioned during an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2022 that Bryan Cranston will be the main figure overseeing the scriptwriting for the upcoming remake.
A limited series would be more suitable for the returning cast members, such as Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, and Frankie Muniz, than a prolonged show due to their busy schedules. In recent times, Muniz has been quite active, not only starring in movies like “Sharknado 3: Oh, Hell No!“, but also making strides in the NASCAR arena.
There’s a lot of buzz about which characters might make an appearance when the show returns in January 2025. Could we possibly see some Krelboynes or maybe even Stevie? Lois’ former boss, Craig, might drop by to congratulate the couple. It would be fantastic if Christopher Lloyd reprised his role as Hal’s father. This comeback is expected to be at least as grand as a Spirit Halloween event.
