Charli XCX may not be playing the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia after all.
In March 2025, according to Deadline, popstar Charli XCX was being strongly considered for the role of the White Witch in the Narnia film directed by Greta Gerwig, which is set to be released on Netflix. However, it’s important to note that her casting had not been officially confirmed at the time, as Deadline described her as one of the top contenders for the part.
As reported by Jeff Sneider’s The Insider, it appears that Charli XCX won’t be taking on the coveted role after all. Now, Greta Gerwig is on the hunt for another actor or actress to fill this part.
Who is being eyed to play the White Witch in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia?
According to Sneider’s report, Margaret Qualley and Emma Mackey are auditioning for a role. Additionally, there’s talk about another actress who will audition as well, but her identity is yet to be revealed.
Lately, Qualley has been seen playing Sue in Coralie Fargeat’s film, The Substance, and she also appeared in Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Kinds of Kindness which were released in 2024. Her movie roles extend to 2016’s The Nice Guys, 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, 2020’s My Salinger Year, 2022’s Sanctuary, and 2023’s Poor Things, among others. She has also made appearances on television shows like The Leftovers, Fosse/Verdon, and Maid.
Mackey is particularly recognized for portraying Maeve Wiley in the Netflix show Sex Education. She’s gained attention for her roles not only in the upcoming film by Greta Gerwig titled Barbie, but also in Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile.
According to reports, Gerwig’s Narnia movie is thought to be an adaption of C.S. Lewis’ The Magician’s Nephew and it’s planned as a launch for a new Netflix series. There are rumors that Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep could land roles in the film, which is set to start production this summer.
2025 has some exciting news for fellow gamers and fans of epic tales like me! Over Thanksgiving, I’ll get a chance to immerse myself in the grandeur of Gerwig’s Narnia at an IMAX theater near me. And just when the festive spirit kicks in, around Christmas, it will magically appear on my Netflix queue for a cozy, post-dinner watch!
