Narivetta: Is Tovino Thomas’ gripping Malayalam action thriller based on real incident from Kerala?

Currently, Tovino Thomas is drawing attention due to his film Narivetta. This film made its way to theaters today and appears to have found a firm footing amidst competition from other releases. Interestingly, I’d like to mention that this Malayalam drama is based on a real-life event.

Indeed, as you’ve noticed, the movie appears to be deeply influenced by the Muthanga event of 2003, a pivotal moment in the struggle for Adivasi land rights in Kerala, that you may well recall.

Ever since February 19, 2003, I’ve been captivated by the tumultuous events that unfolded within the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, nestled in Kerala’s Wayanad district. That day, a fierce confrontation erupted, igniting passions within this protected sanctuary. The clash was between the law enforcement officers during an eviction operation and the indigenous residents who had long called the area their home.

In my role as a lifestyle and community advocate, I regret to share that a confrontation sadly resulted in the tragic loss of life – an Adivasi protester and a law enforcement officer on duty. The situation escalated when tear gas was employed in an effort to disperse the settlers, who displayed substantial resistance.

In the very same year, I found myself stepping onto the grounds of Muthanga, a place deeply rooted in my community’s history, tracing our past back to January of that year.

Due to the widespread conflict following the clash, the Muthanga incident received extensive news coverage across various media outlets and garnered significant humanitarian concern.

Returning to Narivetta, in addition to Tovino Thomas as the main character, the movie also features Suraj Venjaramoodu, Cheran, Arya Salim, Priyamvada Krishnan, Rini Udayakumar, Jithin Eden, and several others.

This drama, titled as yet, is penned by Abin Joseph and helmed by Anuraj Manohar. It is a production of Indian Cinema Company, with Jakes Bejoy providing the movie’s compelling musical background.

Initially planned for a May 16 premiere, the movie Narivetta was eventually pushed back due to unspecified reasons. Now, it’s finally gracing the big screens.

The important parts of the movie starring Tovino Thomas were filmed in various locations such as Kottayam, Alappuzha, and Wayanad, aiming to create a genuine and authentic atmosphere for the audience.
