As a long-time follower and admirer of Kannada cinema, these recent developments surrounding Darshan Thoogudeepa have left me deeply disheartened and bewildered. Having grown up watching his films and idolizing him on screen, it’s hard to reconcile the image of a man I once admired with the allegations against him today.
Here’s my take:
At present, Wilson Garden Naga is detained in prison due to the Karnataka Control of Organized Crimes Act, 2000, because he was involved in the murder of South Bengaluru gangster Mahesh N, who is also known as Siddapura Mahesh.
A recently leaked, unspecified video clip shows Darshan casually video-chatting from inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru. The brief 25-second footage captures a man clad in a yellow T-shirt during the call. Subsequently, Darshan appears on screen, offering a friendly wave to whoever he’s speaking with.
In a casual exchange, I found myself flashing a smile, maintaining an air of normality despite my unconventional circumstances – namely, being within the confines of a jail cell. The setting, with its stark walls and minimal furnishings, served as a poignant backdrop to our interaction.
Currently, there’s a debate about special privileges allegedly provided to Darshan within prison walls. As per a report by TOI Bengaluru, the authorities have temporarily dismissed seven prison officials following the widespread dissemination of an image showing Darshan socializing with notorious criminals over tea and cigarettes.
The released recordings and images spark significant doubts and apprehensions about Darshan’s behavior, as well as that of the prison officials, given his current incarceration for being a suspect in the murder of Renukaswamy (age 33).
A significant dispute arose after it was reported that Darshan received preferential treatment while in prison. This is not the first time such accusations have been made against the Bengaluru Central Prison. Similarly, AIADMK leader Sasikala was allegedly provided VIP privileges during her incarceration for the disproportionate assets case.
Kashinath Shivannagoudar, the victim’s father, voiced his dissatisfaction regarding how Darshan, who is accused of killing his son, has been handled in prison. He requested that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) look into the entire situation, stating, “Though we have faith in our state police, it’s disheartening to see the murder suspects seeming to enjoy themselves. We feel that an investigation by the CBI would be more appropriate.”
Darshan Thoogudeepa and actress Pavitra Gowda are the primary suspects in the murder case of Renukaswamy, a devoted fan of Darshan. The incident occurred when Darshan and his companions confronted Renukaswamy at a garage regarding some offensive messages he had sent to Pavitra. As the argument intensified, it led to Renukaswamy’s fatal injury.
On June 22nd, Darshan and his eleven companions entered a period of judicial detention, marking the conclusion of their time in police custody. Over the last two months, they’ve been housed at Parappana Agrahara Central Prison.
