As a concerned parent and long-time observer of the digital landscape, I must say that this recent development against TikTok has caught my attention. The allegations made by these states are quite alarming, suggesting that the popular video app is not only addictive but also potentially harmful to our children’s mental health and wellness.
This week, a collection of states with diverse political views have initiated legal actions against TikTok. They claim that the well-known video platform poses a threat to children’s mental health and overall wellbeing, and furthermore, they accuse it of attempting to mislead parents into believing the app is secure. Additionally, part of these lawsuits alleges that TikTok has been used for illicit financial transactions.
This week, it was reported by CNBC that a total of 13 states, among them the New York Supreme Court, have submitted lawsuits. The complaints made by New York’s Attorney General Letitia James share similarities with the ones filed in other states, although there are minor differences.
The lawsuit goes on to claim that the developers of TikTok knowingly create the app’s features to appeal to addictive compulsions in children and teens. The lawsuit cites the beginning of this year, when Commissioner of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Dr. Ashwin Vasan issued an advisory that designated social media as a public health hazard, which was then endorsed by Mayor Eric Adams in June 2024. It’s certainly not the first time TikTok has been under the microscope either, as the company was ordered earlier this year to divest from Chinese parent company Bytedance or face a ban in the US.
