Mugler has made an official selection for their new creative director – Miguel Castro Freitas. Taking over from Casey Cadwallader who served for seven years, Freitas will commence his role on April 1st.
In more recent times, Freitas occupied high-level design roles at Sportmax, Dries Van Noten, and Christian Dior Couture. As a young dancer, his artistic background mirrors that of Mugler’s brand founder Manfred Thierry Mugler, who passed away in 2022 at the age of 73. In reference to his new position as creative director for the brand, Freitas expressed, “I am privileged to join the awe-inspiring house of Mugler. A pioneer of the 20th century’s haute couture, Mr. Mugler redefined fashion boundaries. I am excited to collaborate with the teams and share my unique perspective, narrative, and feelings as we continue to uphold this grand legacy.” Freitas earned his degree in women’s fashion design from Central Saint Martins in 2004 and spent the early part of his career working under Julie Verhoeven, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, and Lanvin.
Over a span of seven years at Mugler, Casey Cadwallader built a strong reputation for his daring fashion shows and energetic collections. He collaborated with popular celebrities such as Megan Thee Stallion, Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga, and others, reintroducing theatricality to Mugler and showcasing the brand’s iconic style within modern fashion trends. This week, Mugler announced that Cadwallader would be leaving at the end of March, with his future plans remaining unclear. Adrian Corsin, Mugler Fashion’s managing director, praised Cadwallader’s impact on Mugler, stating, “Casey poured his heart and soul into rejuvenating Mugler. His shows, models, and designs embodied the spirit of the times while respecting the brand’s rich history.” Cadwallader expressed his gratitude to his team, partners, and friends who helped bring his vision for Mugler to life. Before Cadwallader took over, Mugler was led by David Koma, Nicola Formichetti, and Rosemary Rodriguez. Corsin also spoke about Freitas taking on the new role, describing him as a “remarkable talent in tailoring and ‘flou,’ with a unique vision. His understanding of Mugler’s couture codes and legacy will serve as an endless wellspring of inspiration to guide the brand into the future.
During the upcoming Paris Fashion Week this autumn, Freita will present his debut collection for Mugler for the Spring/Summer 2026 season.
