As someone who grew up with James Earl Jones’ powerful voice resonating through my speakers as Mufasa in the original Lion King, I am deeply moved by the tribute that the upcoming Mufasa: The Lion King will be paying to this iconic actor. Losing a father figure like him feels like losing a piece of our collective childhood, and it is heartening to see that his memory will be honored in such a profound way.
Director Barry Jenkins has revealed that the forthcoming film, “Mufasa: The Lion King,” will pay homage to the late James Earl Jones.
What type of tribute will Mufasa: The Lion King have?
In an interview with Variety, Jenkins disclosed that the forthcoming film will acknowledge Jones by dedicating the opening credits to him. A recording of his voice is played prior to a card saying “In Memory,” as a tribute to the iconic actor.
When reflecting on the impact of James Earl Jones, not just to me but to worldwide viewers – it’s common knowledge – I found myself without a father figure growing up. In these films, often, these characters serve as stand-ins for fathers. They embody the role of those father figures.
Later on, Jenkins shared that after Jones’ passing, it seemed almost unbearable to watch the film without paying tribute to him somehow.
Jenkins expressed that it seemed as if we’d all lost a respected figurehead. We had all lost someone who held great significance for us. Watching this film, it felt necessary to pay tribute to him in some way, as his influence would be constantly on our minds. Given the central role he played, it felt appropriate to acknowledge him at the beginning. The studio concurred immediately, and we sought a tribute that was straightforward yet impactful and poignant.

The movie recounts the surprising ascension of a cherished king from the Pride Lands, with Rafiki sharing the tale of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala. Comic relief is provided by characters Timon and Pumbaa throughout. In flashbacks, we learn about Mufasa, an abandoned cub who finds solace with a kind-hearted lion called Taka, the heir to a royal lineage. This fortuitous encounter initiates a grand adventure for a unique band of outcasts seeking their purpose. Their friendships will be stretched as they unite to avoid a menacing and lethal enemy.
