Mufasa Disney+ Release Date Set for The Lion King Prequel’s Streaming Debut

Disney has announced when you can stream “The Lion King‘s Origins: Mufasa” on their service, Disney+. This prequel story delves into Mufasa’s past, revealing how he became the unexpected king of the Pride Lands.

In the synopsis, it’s stated that “Mufasa: The Lion King” tasks Rafiki with sharing Mufasa’s legend to young lion cub Kiara, Simba and Nala’s daughter. Comical duo Timon and Pumbaa also get involved. The story unfolds in flashbacks, revealing Mufasa as a lost orphaned cub who meets Taka, a sympathetic lion from a royal lineage. This encounter kickstarts an epic adventure of a motley crew of unlikely companions seeking their purpose. Their friendships will be put to the test as they navigate through perilous challenges to escape a dangerous and lethal adversary.

The ensemble features Aaron Pierre playing Mufasa, Kelvin Harrison Jr. taking on the role of Taka, Tiffany Boone portraying Sarabi, Kagiso Lediga bringing young Rafiki to life, Preston Nyman embodying Zazu, Mads Mikkelsen as Kiros, Thandiwe Newton as Eshe, Lennie James as Obasi, Anika Noni Rose as Afia, Keith David returning as Masego, John Kani reprising his role as Rafiki, Seth Rogen lending his voice to Pumbaa, Billy Eichner voicing Timon, Donald Glover starring as Simba, Blue Ivy Carter joining the cast as Kiara, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter taking on the character of Nala.

Barry Jenkins, who won an Oscar, was the director of Mufasa, a project that had a screenplay penned by Jeff Nathanson. The producers on this film are Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak, with Peter Tobyansen serving as an executive producer. Lin-Manuel Miranda created unique songs for the soundtrack, while Dave Metzger was responsible for composing the score.

2024 December saw the debut of Mufasa with a relatively low domestic earnings of $35.4 million. Despite this initial underperformance, Mufasa eventually proved to be a long-term box office success, largely because of minimal competition in January. To date, its worldwide earnings have totaled an impressive $712 million.
