The Last Showgirl” is a gloomy and modest movie set in Las Vegas, revolving around Shelly, a 57-year-old former showgirl, portrayed by Pamela Anderson. The production, once a long-standing staple, is on the verge of closing due to time’s relentless march. As the saying goes, “Time waits for no one,” particularly poignant for someone whose career has been defined by her physical appearance.
As a film aficionado, I must admit that the narrative of this movie felt rather compact for its 88-minute runtime, often leaving me yearning for more engaging moments. Regrettably, there were numerous instances where the pace lagged, making it hard to remain fully invested. The storyline revolving around Shelly’s daughter Hanna, played by Billie Lourd, felt underdeveloped, especially considering her sudden reappearance in Shelly’s life after a long absence. We eventually learn that Hanna’s father is the manager of the Las Vegas venue, Eddie, portrayed by Dave Bautista.
Annette, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, was another character who seemed to add little substance to an already brief tale. Her appearance seemed more like padding than a necessary component of the storyline. Despite her role as a waitress at a local casino and her exceptionally dark facial tan giving her a much older appearance than her actual age of 66, Annette felt unnecessary in moving the plot forward.
