Movie Review: The Amateur

The recently released film titled “The Amateur” demonstrates an outstanding concept for an action flick, but unfortunately falls short in its delivery.

A married pair, Heller (portrayed by Rami Malek) and Sarah Rachel Brosnahan, find themselves apart when Sarah goes on a work trip in London. Heller, a skilled computer operator employed by the CIA, experiences a heart-wrenching tragedy as his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. In response to this loss, he takes it upon himself to take action, despite having no experience in CIA fieldwork. To prepare him for what’s ahead, Heller undergoes private training from an ex-agent named Henderson (played by Laurence Fishburne). Henderson recognizes that Heller lacks the necessary physical strength, is not a natural-born killer, and therefore questions whether he should persist on his mission for justice due to these shortcomings.

The issue with this movie lies in its lack of continuity between scenes, no development or clarification about the events unfolding or Heller’s reasons for his actions. Characters seem to materialize out of thin air, leaving us puzzled over how such a weakly-written screenplay could have been approved for production.
