As a seasoned film critic who’s been around the block a few times, I must say that “Heretic” is a chilling tale that hits close to home, particularly for those who’ve dabbled in door-to-door evangelism. The film masterfully portrays the disconcerting feeling of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, which is a situation I unfortunately know all too well from my days as a Jehovah’s Witness.
The recently released film “Heretic” serves as a cautionary tale about the challenges faced by young women, particularly those affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (often referred to as the Mormon Church), when they go door-to-door spreading religious teachings. It’s revealed in this narrative that according to church rules, a woman representative is not permitted to enter a home alone with a man, unless another female is present in the house. This movie underscores the specific guidelines within the church regarding such situations.
In this narrative, we encounter Mr. Reed, a man of questionable sanity portrayed by Hugh Grant, on a stormy day. Two young women, Sister Paxton (Chloe East) and Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher), mistakenly knock on his door. Unfortunately for them, they’ve knocked at the wrong time on the doorstep of a man who has unconventional views about religion. He likens life and faith to popular board games like Monopoly in lengthy discourses that leave the two young women petrified, as they now find themselves trapped inside an ancient house during the storm with someone who appears to be dangerously insane.
The remainder of the narrative unfolds a sequence of events commonly seen in horror films, where characters find themselves in a perilous situation involving a deranged killer. This antagonist is relentless in pursuing them, often confining them within a house or structure. As they frantically flee, they may encounter gunfire, stabbings, or other life-threatening scenarios. In their struggle to stay alive, they devise desperate strategies to defeat their attacker and ultimately break free.
