The comedic horror film “Heart Eyes,” released for Valentine’s Day, manages to poke fun at its own genre and incorporate humor effectively, despite being one of the typical slasher movies. With a preposterous plotline like a serial killer targeting couples on Valentine’s Day while donning a mask featuring heart-shaped eyes, it is no wonder that numerous comical scenes are essential to the story.
In a nutshell, the series Heart Eyes features Jordana Brewster, known from the Fast and Furious series, portraying Detective Jeanine Shaw. Interestingly, her character’s last name is a nod to the movie “Hobbs and Shaw”, as her partner’s surname is Hobbs. The main plot revolves around the complex dynamic between two colleagues, Ally (played by Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding). They exhibit a love-hate, adversarial relationship when they are together, but when apart, they are constantly on the run to avoid being killed by a psychotic killer who dons a mask with heart eyes. Despite his menacing appearance, this murderer often appears comical, which seems to undermine any real sense of fear he should invoke.
At the climax, an unexpected turn of events occurred, displaying a touch of creativity, although much of it was quite nonsensical, yet amusing enough to keep you engaged throughout.
This movie’s Rotten Tomatoes score seems excessively high at 85%. While I rate it at 75%, I can still recommend it modestly due to the screenwriter’s display of innovative thoughts and creativity.
