As a seasoned gamer of Indian cinema, I eagerly anticipate the cinematic extravaganza that the upcoming Independence Day releases promise! The lineup this year is nothing short of spectacular, with a diverse array of genres catering to every taste.
The 15th of August, celebrated as Indian Independence Day, holds great significance not only for our nation but also in the realm of the Indian film industry. Each year, filmmakers endeavor to debut their productions during this period, taking advantage of the heightened patriotic sentiments and extended holiday break. In 2024, this tradition persists with a thrilling lineup of films set for release, featuring action, drama, and fun for moviegoers nationwide. From the much-anticipated sequel to the hit film Stree to Thangalaan, the upcoming Independence Day promises a captivating cinematic experience for audiences across India.
Khel Khel Mein
Khel Khel Mein is highly anticipated as a humor-rich drama remake of the 2016 Italian movie Perfect Strangers by Paolo Genovese. Led by director Mudassar Aziz, the star-studded cast includes Akshay Kumar, Ammy Virk, Taapsee Pannu, Vaani Kapoor, Fardeen Khan, Aditya Seal, and Pragya Jaiswal in key roles. Notably, Chitrangada Singh will grace the screen with a special appearance.
Originally scheduled for release on September 6, the movie is now set to come out a month earlier, on August 15, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. The plot centers around seven old friends who reconnect after years apart and choose to share all their text messages, emails, and conversations for a day. As secrets are exposed, their friendships are put under strain, resulting in both amusing and intense predicaments.
Before even hitting the big screen, the movie created quite a stir, as news broke that Netflix had secured the digital streaming rights. It’s anticipated that the film will appear on Netflix around two months following its theater premiere.
Vedaa
Under the guidance of director Nikkhil Advani, the movie Vedaa featuring John Abraham is scheduled for release on Independence Day alongside other highly anticipated films. This film narrates a captivating tale about an ex-army officer who guides an ordinary girl to stand against caste discrimination and the practice of untouchability. The trailer suggests a potent ending brimming with intense conflict and brutal confrontations, promising a thrilling cinematic journey.
In preparation for its debut, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has given Vedaa a U/A rating. Notably, over nine minutes of content have been cut to conform with the board’s regulations. This film boasts a talented cast, including John Abraham, Sharvari, Tamannaah Bhatia, Abhishek Banerjee, and many more distinguished actors.
Stree 2
Movie 2 titled Stree has sparked great anticipation among viewers following the unveiling of its trailer and tunes. The sequel is helmed by Amar Kaushik and features the returning ensemble cast consisting of Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, and Pankaj Tripathi. In an unexpected move, Varun Dhawan, who was previously seen in Bhediya, another successful production by Maddock Entertainment, will grace the screen with a special guest appearance.
In the heart of Chanderi town, Story 2 introduces a sinister presence known as Sar Kata Bhoot, who starts kidnapping women. This unsettling occurrence sets off a chain reaction of bizarre yet chilling events, skillfully merging horror and humor that should delight fans of the initial movie.
Thangalaan
In the hands of director Pa. Ranjith, Thangalaan unfolds as a dramatic tale steeped in history, with British India serving as the scenic backdrop. The story delves deep into the lesser-known chapters of the past, zeroing in on the Kolar Gold Field (KGF) and unveiling the grim reality of how nearly 900 metric tons of gold were mined from this site and shipped to England by British colonizers.
In the upcoming movie “Thangalaan,” Vikram plays the main character, joined by well-known actors such as Malavika Mohanan, Parvathy Thiruvothu, and Daniel Caltagirone. Despite not yet being shown in cinemas, Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the film following its theater release. You’ll be able to watch it on Netflix in various languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi once it becomes available.
Besides the Indian Independence Day premieres, a host of other significant films are set to debut in cinemas as well, making it a potential blockbuster day for Indian cinema. Notable among them are Double iSmart, Mr Bachchan, Andhagan, Bhairathi Ranagal, Hunt, Demonte Colony 2, Raghu Thatha, Aay, 35 – Chinna Katha Kaadu, Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi, and Nunakuzhi. Collectively, these eagerly awaited releases are expected to create a fierce competition at the box office.
