In the month of May, WB Games and NetherRealm released a collection known as Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition. This raised some concerns among fans, as it seemed like a comprehensive package. Indeed, it appears to be the final installment, as NetherRealm has officially announced on social media that they will no longer provide DLC support for MK1.
It’s regrettable, but I’m afraid our team at NetherRealm must redirect their efforts towards a new project in order to make it outstanding. This change may be disheartening for fans, but it’s crucial for the project’s success.

The following was posted to the Mortal Kombat Twitter account on Friday, May 23:
As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the ongoing updates for Mortal Kombat 1, which includes balance tweaks and bug fixes to enhance gameplay. However, it is important to note that no new DLC characters or story expansions will be released beyond this point.
I’m sorry to say this, but due to the demands of our upcoming project, our NetherRealm team must redirect their efforts away from the current one. We want to ensure that we deliver an exceptional end product for you all!
Following its launch, Mortal Kombat 1 experienced a significant story expansion, though it wasn’t particularly well-received. It seemed that NetherRealm was saving their best for another DLC story, which would pave the way for the next sequel, much like how Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath did. Additionally, the game introduced two seasons’ worth of downloadable characters, culminating with the T-1000 from Terminator 2: Judgement Day.
As a dedicated gamer, I can confirm that Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition seems to be packed with all the goodness from the original MK1, as NetherRealm seems ready to embark on new adventures. Although Mortal Kombat 1 managed to sell an impressive 5 million copies, it seems like that’s not enough for our parent company WB Games. However, considering what Warner Bros. has been up to in the gaming world this year, things could have turned out a lot more challenging.
