Moon Knight Had Different MCU Villain Until Creative Changes

In the Moon Knight TV series, it was Arthur Harrow, portrayed by Ethan Hawke, who served as the main antagonist. However, creator Jeremy Slater mentioned that this wasn’t originally the plan.

Who was supposed to be Moon Knight Season 1’s villain?

In a conversation with ComicBook, Slater shared that initially he aimed to incorporate Bushman, a well-known Moon Knight antagonist, into the show. However, Marvel Studios and director Mohamed Diab decided to take a somewhat different approach instead.

Slater stated, “In the end, Marvel opted for a different approach and assembled their own team of writers. It’s like joining a massive playground and using someone else’s toys temporarily, understanding they don’t really belong to you in the long run. That’s just how it is, so it wasn’t unexpected in the slightest.

In this version, it’s explained how Bushman will be used in the show. Here, he is portrayed as the avatar of a different Egyptian deity, and in the series, he will confront Moon Knight. The author hints at Black Panther’s success and Michael B. Jordan’s memorable performance as Killmonger, which made the choice seem somewhat repetitive, prompting a change.

Slater explained, “Our aim was to have Marc Spector serve as Khonshu’s Avatar, and then pit Bushman against an avatar of another Egyptian deity. Instead, the writers chose Harrow, who became Ammit’s disciple. The challenge we faced was that Black Panther had been released recently, and Michael B. Jordan’s portrayal of Killmonger was outstanding. This left a powerful impact, making whatever we wrote feel somewhat imitative.
