Mookie Betts To Miss Tokyo Series Due to Illness

Mookie Betts will not play in the Tokyo Series due to an illness. Betts is an outfielder, shortstop, and second baseman currently affiliated with the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball. The Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts, disclosed the news in a recent press conference.

Here are all the details.

What happened to Mookie Betts?

Mookie Beets will be missing the Tokyo Series due to an illness. Dave Roberts, who has been serving as a manager for the Dodgers since 2016, announced on Sunday that Betts would not play in both games of the Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs. The first of these games, to be held on Tuesday at the Tokyo Dome, will serve as the opener for the Major League Baseball season. The second game will take place a day later. In Betts’ place, Miguel Rojas will begin the game as shortstop.

“He’s not going to play in these two games,” Roberts stated during the above-mentioned press conference. “When you’re dehydrated, that’s what opens a person up to soft tissue injuries. We’re very mindful of that.” (via Fox Sports)

Betts reportedly developed flu-like symptoms while he was in Arizona, preparing to leave for Japan. Despite this, he still joined the team’s journey to the Asian country.

“I think that we’re really trying to be mindful of not just Opening Day, but not putting him in harm’s way,” Roberts elaborated. “He hasn’t taken live at-bats or played in any games. And not to put him in a position where he potentially could get hurt.”

Roberts further noted that Beets didn’t show signs of being taxed when he came in on the day. According to Roberts, Betts had lost about 15 pounds of weight but was trying to stay hydrated and regain the strength he had lost in the recent few days. Betts might return to the US before the team to allow himself some time to rest. The Dodgers have their first domestic game on March 27, 2025, against the Detroit Tigers.
