As a seasoned gamer with a knack for binge-watching true crime series, I can hardly contain my excitement for Netflix’s upcoming offering, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.” Having devoured countless hours of Dahmer, Dateline, and 48 Hours Mystery, I find myself drawn to the intrigue surrounding these notorious cases.
Gear up, enthusiasts of true crime! The sequel to Netflix’s hugely popular series, “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” is set to arrive on your screens soon. This time, the narrative shifts towards brothers who were found guilty of murdering their own parents. Despite initial assumptions that the first season, which focused on the notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, would be a one-time production, Netflix greenlit two additional seasons in November 2022, thanks to the show’s success.
Title for the second installment is “Monsters: The Tale of Lyle and Erik Menendez“, narrating the account of the siblings who murdered their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, on August 20, 1989 in Beverly Hills, California. This heinous act, subsequent investigation, and court trial captivated headlines across the nation as the brothers claimed sexual abuse by their father, creating an additional dimension to the case while audiences nationwide tuned in via their TV screens.
It’s been officially announced that “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is set to debut on September 19, 2024. In addition to the release date, Netflix has also unveiled a short preview.
Check out the official synopsis for the next season:
Following the massive success of DAHMER, Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series returns with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, chronicling the case of the real-life brothers who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menendez.
While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents.
Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?
On September 21, 2022, the Netflix series titled “The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” premiered, with Joe Berlinger at the helm as director and producer of the docuseries “Conversations With a Killer: The Jeffrey Dahmer Tapes“, which followed suit on October 7, 2022. It’s intriguing to speculate if Netflix plans to develop a documentary or docuseries about the Menendez brothers, potentially releasing it soon after the debut of “Monsters“. Given its potential popularity, I have no doubt that such a production would be well-received.
Previously mentioned, Cooper Koch (from “Power Book II: Ghost”) is set to take on the role of Erik Menendez in “General Hospital”, with Nicholas Alexander Chavez portraying Kyle. Instead of well-established stars, Netflix has chosen up-and-coming actors for the main characters, but they’ve secured Javier Bardem to play José Menendez and Chloë Sevigny as Kitty Menendez. Although I haven’t watched anything featuring Koch or Chavez before, this lineup promises to be quite remarkable! I can’t wait to see the performances this talented group delivers.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my eagerness to witness where this captivating anthology series unfolds next. The initial season delved deep into one of America’s most infamous serial killers, but the second installment appears to be taking a different turn. It seems we’re venturing into more intricate territories, shedding light on allegations of sexual abuse that were substantiated by the involved family. Intriguingly, Netflix hinted at the anthology delving into “other monstrous figures who have left their mark on society.” Indeed, this piques my interest!
As a thrilled enthusiast, I’m excitedly reminding you all to keep an eye on our platform for sneak peeks and trailers of the highly anticipated “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” before its grand debut on Netflix, set for September 19.
