Monster season 3 officially sets new killer subject and leading star

As a fan who has been through countless hours of true crime documentaries and series, I am absolutely thrilled about Charlie Hunnam joining Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series for season 3! With his gripping performances in shows like “Sons of Anarchy,” it’s clear that he has the acting chops to bring Ed Gein’s twisted tale to life.

Prior to the eagerly awaited comeback of Ryan Murphy’s “Monster” anthology series, Netflix is already pondering over season 3. On September 16, the streaming platform declared that Charlie Hunnam, famously known for his role in “Sons of Anarchy”, will spearhead “Monster” season 3 as the notorious serial killer Ed Gein. Murphy unveiled the thrilling news about Hunnam’s casting and the focus of season 3 during the premiere of “Monsters” season 2.

Excitedly speaking as a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that, based on Netflix’s recent press release, production for the chilling third season of “Monster” is set to commence next month! This means we could potentially see the cameras rolling in October 2024. As more details about this anticipated third season unfold with filming, I eagerly anticipate further updates such as additional cast members and a clearer insight into what this season holds.

In September 2022, the first season of Monster, focusing on Jeffrey Dahmer and featuring Evan Peters, was a massive triumph for Netflix. It garnered significant viewership and even won an Emmy Award despite the controversy surrounding its release. This success led Netflix to commission two additional seasons in November 2022, transforming the series into an anthology.

Under a new title, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” debuts on Netflix on September 19, marking nearly two years since its initial airing. This season features Nicholas Chavez and Cooper Koch portraying the Menendez brothers, while Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny bring their parents, Jose and Kitty, to life. In “Monsters” season 2, we delve into the brothers’ murder of their parents and explore the question: Who were the real monsters in this heartbreaking true crime saga that captivated the nation?

In the third season of “Monster,” coming up, we find Hunnam working with Murphy for the first time. Usually, Murphy prefers to work with a regular cast. After wrapping up his role on “Sons of Anarchy” in 2014, Hunnam went on to feature in Apple TV+’s “Shantaram,” and will soon grace our screens in the Amazon Prime Video series “Criminal.” He also made an appearance in the first part of last year’s Netflix double-feature film, “Rebel Moon.

As the weeks count down to the premiere of Monsters season 2, rumors circulated that season 3 might delve into the tale of John Wayne Gacy. However, with the formal announcement from Netflix and Ryan Murphy himself, we can confirm that these speculations were unfounded (though it’s possible that future seasons could explore this serial killer’s story).

In the upcoming season of Monster, the character being portrayed by Hunnam will be based on Ed Gein, infamously known as the Butcher of Plainfield. Gein admitted to murdering two women in the 1950s – Mary Hogan and Bernice Warden. Additionally, he was notorious for stealing bodies from graveyards. The chilling details of his life promise a season filled with controversy, graphic scenes, and intense unease. Fans can look forward to watching Hunnam as Gein when Netflix airs the series sometime in 2025.
