Monster Hunter Wilds proves there's power in numbers

As a seasoned Monster Hunter veteran with countless hours spent slaying beasts across various dimensions, I must say that my hands-on experience with Monster Hunter Wilds has left me both exhilarated and eager for more. The demo showcased an intriguing narrative set in the Forbidden Lands, a new ecosystem teeming with danger and opportunity.

In a realm where humans battle monstrous creatures, humanity faces a more perilous frontier than ever. In the forthcoming Monster Hunter Wilds, adventurers delve into unexplored lands and the hunt takes on a fresh feel. Shacknews recently got to test out this upcoming hit for the first time. During our playtime, we discovered that teamwork is key.

In my enthusiasm as a fan, I’d rephrase it like this: “I found the Monster Hunter Wilds demo divided into two engaging sections. The initial part delves deep into storytelling and tutorials. The narrative of Monster Hunter Wilds unfolds as our character’s colony embarks on an expedition to the Forbidden Lands. A boy who claims to be from there stumbled upon us, and his presence stirred curiosity in our colony. He narrowly escaped a formidable monster through an underground tunnel, but in hot pursuit, the monster caved it in. This mysterious beast is speculated to be the legendary White Wraith, believed to have gone extinct eons ago. Our colony follows the boy’s trail, hoping to uncover the truth about the White Wraith, only to discover that the Forbidden Lands hold far more peril than we initially anticipated.”

In my adventure, I stumble upon an unsettling scene: A horde of Balaharas is chasing a young girl atop a swift Seikret. Without hesitation, I leap onto my own Seikret steed to intervene. Using my trusty sling, I manage to keep the Balaharas at bay and successfully rescue the girl. With gratitude in her eyes, she implores me for aid in locating her lost brother.

As I delve deeper into this jungle, I suddenly find myself in a precarious situation – my brother’s trapped by the elusive Chatacabra! This amphibian beast likes to strike from afar with its long tongue coated in paralyzing slime. But luckily, I’ve got my trusty Heavy Bow at hand, which seems to be just the thing for weakening this creature.

In the upcoming segment of the demonstration, I found a striking resemblance to a previous encounter. Earlier at Summer Game Fest, Shacknews had observed Capcom developers pursuing an Alpha Doshaguma. Now it’s our chance to experience the chase. Let’s set out on the hunt for the Alpha Doshaguma ourselves.

Initially, the Capcom team made monster hunting appear effortless, leaving me with just a set of tutorials to guide me. In the initial phase of the demo, I got to choose my preferred weapon, but the second part unexpectedly equipped me with a Great Sword and a Light Bowgun. Upon discovering the Alpha Doshaguma, the battle truly commenced, and I was too engrossed in the action to switch weapons. This left me charging forward with the Great Sword, but there arose an issue: the Alpha Doshaguma wasn’t the only one present. It was accompanied by a group of smaller Doshaguma.

Triumph in Monster Hunter Wilds relies on having a larger number of forces compared to your enemies. This means you should bring allies and split the opposition apart. Alpha monsters usually have smaller minions accompanying them. If these numbers are ignored, it’s simple to be overwhelmed. To disperse these numbers, players are recommended to throw Large Dung Pods using the hunter’s sling. The foul smell of monster waste is enough to scatter the group, separating the alpha and making it vulnerable.

Having spent countless hours navigating treacherous terrains and battling formidable beasts, I can confidently say that additional help is always welcome when it comes to hunting. In my experience, the SOS flare has been a lifesaver for solo hunters like myself, as it summons AI companions to aid in our quests. These digital comrades can either take charge and dish out punishment or serve as decoys while we prepare for our own onslaught. Moreover, these NPC allies are skilled trap setters, which can significantly weaken our targets before we even engage them in combat. Overall, the SOS flare has become an indispensable tool in my arsenal and I wholeheartedly recommend it to fellow hunters embarking on their own adventures.

Overcoming an Alpha Doshaguma requires significant effort, even with additional aid. The challenging landscape regularly shifts, making progress difficult. On top of that, weather conditions can alter rapidly during combat, adding unpredictability. For instance, I’ve seen bushes unexpectedly appear, posing a fire risk. At various instances, thunderstorms would erupt, necessitating caution when navigating my Seikret to prevent it from being struck by lightning.

In the Forbidden Realms, teeming with various beasts, some prove beneficial. During a Summer Game Fest demonstration, developers stumbled upon an Apex Beast, later identified as a Rey Dau. This formidable flying creature possesses electric discharge abilities. While the developers found themselves targeted by the Rey Dau, I managed to evade its detection. Unfortunately, the Alpha Doshaguma wasn’t as fortunate and sustained massive damage when the Rey Dau attacked, losing thousands of health points. The Alpha hobbled away, battered in several spots, providing numerous opportunities for increased damage.

During those 25 minutes that Capcom developers removed the alpha, I managed to bring it down in just 13 minutes. This was largely due to a lucky Rey Dau attack and some helpful nudges from Balahara. Similar to the developers, I defeated the alpha next to another smaller Doshaguma, which turned hostile and assaulted my party, despite the hunt officially being over.

Monster Hunter Wilds promises an exhilarating adventure ripe for engaging stories to share with colleagues around the water cooler. The new feature, Seikret, enhances the gameplay by enabling hunters to track injured monsters. Despite the complexity suggested by the videos (and my obvious underutilization of available tools), it’s accessible enough for a thrilling monster hunt experience. Monster Hunter Wilds is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in the year 2025.

As someone who has attended numerous game launches and press events over the years, I must say that my experience playing the early PS5 build at a recent event in Los Angeles left me quite intrigued. However, it is important to note that what I played could still be subject to change before the final product hits shelves. Having said that, I can’t wait to see how this console evolves and what exciting games will be released for it!
