Monster Hunter Wilds lead doesn’t watch what similar action RPGs are doing and the results have “sort of spoken for themselves”

Ryozo Tsujimoto, the lead producer of Monster Hunter Wilds, doesn’t spend much time observing what other games in the same genre are up to. In his view, creating a new Monster Hunter game is already an extensive task, and he believes that concentrating on enhancing the series’ inherent strengths has been highly beneficial so far.

Personally speaking, when it comes to creating Monster Hunter games, we’re so deeply engrossed in the process that we seldom cast a glance at other titles. The challenge of crafting each Monster Hunter game is more than enough for us. As the series has evolved over the years, our strategy has been to focus on one title at a time.

Tsujimoto goes on to detail that the team tends to focus on examining their own past achievements from prior Monster Hunter games and envisioning future possibilities. This involves identifying essential game aspects, expanding upon them, and asking questions like: “What’s our vision this time? What creative concept do we wish to convey? Which gameplay elements does that entail, and how can we effectively communicate those features to players, ensuring they have the intended gaming experience?

The long-time Monster Hunter player emphasizes that our progress to this point has come from continually advancing the concept of Monster Hunter in each new game, rather than imitating competitors. With their first open beta amassing over half a million simultaneous monster hunters and the second Monster Hunter Wilds beta performing equally well, there’s no need for them to follow others. Instead, their primary focus is on creating the optimal Monster Hunter experience once more, as the success of previous releases has already demonstrated this effectively.
