Don’t let its diminutive stature deceive you; this little guy packs a punch that can leave even the most seasoned adventurers flat on their backs if they’re not on their toes. Its arsenal of unique attacks can turn you into fine confetti, but fear not! It also has vulnerabilities just waiting to be exploited by the right equipment and items in your inventory.
Recommended Gear and Weapons Against Xu Wu
Xu Wu’s primary vulnerability lies with Ice. Since there aren’t many weapons imbued with Ice at this stage, the Hirabami could be a suitable choice. You might remember this creature from the Iceshard Cliffs, and you can also encounter it in other optional quests following your initial defeat. If it fits your preferred weapon category, it may be beneficial to revisit that area and grind for a Hirabami weapon.
An alternative option could be to use a weapon that’s been infused with poison, like the ones from Rompopolo, since Xu Wu is particularly vulnerable to the Poison status effect. If you prefer ranged combat, you can opt for specialized ammunition for the Bow or Bowgun to exploit those weaknesses.
Regarding armor, it’s crucial to have a good amount of resistance against Dragon elemental attacks since Xu Wu’s assaults cause this kind of damage. Nerscylla is a reasonable choice with 2 Dragon Resistance in every piece. However, the best pick might be Guardian Ebony Odagaron, the monster you recently fought before encountering Xu Wu. This creature not only boasts impressive overall defense stats but also has 4 Dragon Resistance on each gear item.

Xu Wu Attacks and Weak Points
Xu Wu’s attacks often mirror those of a monster resembling a cephalopod. Its primary weapons are its long, sharp-tipped tentacles, which he uses both for powerful slashes and as projectiles.
One distinctive tactic this creature employs is digging into the ground and then surprising the hunter by emerging suddenly from beneath with its fanged maw. Additionally, it can seize the hunter in its tentacles. In such a situation, either using slinger ammo or delivering a stabbing attack would be necessary to escape. If you fail to inflict enough damage quickly, Xu Wu will retaliate with a fierce assault before eventually releasing the hunter on its own.
Xu Wu possesses vulnerable areas that can be shattered or detached. Its head stands out as the largest and most accessible target, susceptible to breaking. Next to it, its mouth also has a breakable weak spot. Moreover, each of its arms can be severed, allowing for separate carving and acquisition of useful crafting materials.
