In Monster Hunter Wilds, the Apex Predators mean business! Whether you’re up against the treacherous Uth Duna who thrives in water or the lightning-wielding Rey Dau that is today’s main topic, these creatures are no walk in the park to battle.
On the expansive Windward Plains, Rey Dau serves as the dominant beastly predator. In the game’s open beta phase, he was among the rare creatures players could engage in battle.
Battling Rey Dau can be quite challenging, regardless if it’s of low or high difficulty level. However, my comprehensive guide on vanquishing Rey Dau aims to provide all the essential information about this formidable foe, including its vulnerabilities and the most effective strategies for combat.
How To Prepare For Rey Dau
It’s important to note that in the main story quest called “A World Turned Upside Down,” you will be pursuing the high-rank version of Rey Dau officially.
I highly suggest you acquire the skill related to earplugs for your armor or accessories, as it effectively cancels out Rey Dau’s Weak Roar ability. Additionally, having some armor pieces equipped to defend against the Thunder element wouldn’t be a bad idea either.
On most hunting trips, it’s not always essential to carry crucial items. However, in the specific case of Rey Dau, it is strongly recommended that you take along these specified items:
1. A sturdy and reliable hunting knife
2. A good quality flashlight or headlamp
3. Extra batteries for your flashlight/headlamp
4. A first aid kit with bandages, antiseptics, and pain relievers
5. Waterproof matches or a fire-starter (ferrocerium rod, flint)
6. A multi-tool or Swiss Army knife
7. High-energy snacks like energy bars or trail mix
8. A map of the area you’ll be hunting in and a compass or GPS device
9. Reflective clothing to increase visibility during low light conditions
10. Insect repellent and sunscreen
11. Rain gear (poncho, raincoat, or waterproof pants)
12. Warm clothing layers for cold weather conditions
13. A hunting license if required in your area
14. Game bags to carry your catch

- Flashpods: The Rey Dau has some attacks and animations where it will momentarily go airborne. Flashpods are great for stunning and taking it down to lay on the damage.
- Nulberry: Having Nulberries on hand is great, just in case you want to cure and alleviate yourself of the Thunderblight status effect.
Rey Dau’s Weaknesses
To have an edge in fighting Rey Dau and potentially simplify the battle, it’s crucial to identify its primary elemental vulnerability and learn which specific body area to focus on for attack could be quite advantageous.
Considering its lightning-infused attacks, the main weakness of the Rey Dau is water .
To weaken specific body parts, just as with the Rathalos, you can damage both the head and the wings, and even detach the tail to isolate it for separate carving.
An implement resembling a large sword, such as the Greatsword, could be an excellent choice to place in your second equipment slot, serving to amputate Rey Dau’s tail.
In that context, I primarily employed the Hammer as my tool in this battle, effectively shattering the fragile components of Rey Dau.
Moreover, one noteworthy feature is that the Hammer delivers persistent shock damage to the foe’s head, effectively stunning them. As for the Upswing, it provides an opportunity for you to respond to some of Rey Dau’s physical assaults.
As a gamer, I’d say, “You could set up a Pitfall trap too, which will momentarily incapacitate it, giving you an opportunity to deal some extra damage on its weak points.
If your weapons cause conditions such as poisoning, putting an enemy to sleep, or causing exhaustion, they are also very effective, given their ratings.
How To Beat Rey Dau
Primarily, the creature known as Rey Dau primarily unleashes powerful lightning assaults using its two horns on its head. These attacks can cover a wide area, and if your defenses are weak, they could very well prove fatal with just one strike.
Below, I have detailed his usual strategies, the method to spot them, and ways to effectively respond to them in order to prevent being captured and sent back to base.

It’s somewhat amusing, given that he’s among the initial formidable Beasts you meet in Monster Hunter Wilds, he serves as your early hurdle to overcome.
During my battle against a formidable opponent known as High-Rank Rey Dau, I swiftly ended the fight by persistently attacking his head and wings with my Hammer.
Primarily, aim to uncover and attack Rey Dau’s vulnerable spots whenever feasible, as this will help weaken him momentarily, allowing for a chance to inflict significant harm.
During joint hunting expeditions, keep a close eye out for Rey Dau switching targets to other hunters during attacks, similar to bolt strikes. Also be aware that the Drive-by Wing smash could alter its course based on the positions of other hunters on the battlefield.
