Monster Hunter Wilds’ FF14 crossover update and Omega hunt lands on Monday, but we’re still waiting until December for those much-needed performance improvements

Capcom announced today that a new update for Monster Hunter Wilds, featuring content from Final Fantasy 14, will be released on Monday, September 29th. This update, called Title Update 3, was first shown in August and will include quests, gear, and cosmetic items inspired by Final Fantasy 14’s world of Eorzea. However, many players are concerned that this update doesn’t fix the game’s ongoing performance problems.

The biggest new addition in this update is Omega Planetes, a powerful mechanical boss from the Final Fantasy series. It’s somehow traveled between worlds and ended up in the Monster Hunter universe. Since Omega’s main purpose is to destroy dragons, its arrival isn’t good news for Monster Hunter’s dragon-filled world, and hunters will need to send it back where it came from.

Similar to the large monster hunts in Monster Hunter: World, the fight against Omega in Final Fantasy XIV will use special effects, combat features, and dangerous area-of-effect attacks commonly found in the game’s toughest raids. From what we’ve seen, this means players will have to dodge a lot of powerful beams, which feels fitting considering the challenging raid encounters in Final Fantasy XIV.

The next update, along with the Omega content, will introduce new gear and items inspired by Final Fantasy XIV. Hunters will be able to acquire a Dark Knight-themed armor set called Bale Armor, which includes the ability ‘The Blackest Night’ – a shield that absorbs damage and retaliates with a powerful attack when broken. Additionally, players can find a ‘Soul of the Pictomancer’ item, allowing them to cast Pictomancer spells as long as it’s held in their item pouch.

Players can also unlock a range of cosmetic items, such as new gestures, Palico armor inspired by Morbols, a unique Chocobo skin, and a weapon charm that summons a Cactuar to follow their hunter.

Next month, we’re adding even more content! Nu-Udra will gain a challenging arch-tempered version, and the Dreamspell Festival-our autumn event-will transform the Grand Hub with spooky decorations.

I’m excited about the new free content, but unfortunately, Title Update 3 won’t include any improvements to how the game runs. Poor performance has been a major source of frustration for Wilds players for months, leading to declining sales and, sadly, even harassment of the developers.

Capcom announced on X (formerly Twitter) in August that they’re working to improve the game’s performance and fix stability issues based on player feedback. They plan to release a major update this winter – Free Title Update 4 – which will include improvements to both the CPU and GPU. Additional fixes will follow at a later date.

Okay, so Capcom *says* they’re fixing the really bad technical problems with Wilds, but even if they do, it’s gonna be almost ten months after the game came out! Honestly, it felt pretty bad watching them spend a solid minute and a half of their showcase talking about new skins and cosmetic stuff coming in the next update, when so many of us are still dealing with frustrating performance issues. It just didn’t sit right with me.

Wilds already has over $350 worth of optional purchases. Personally, I think it would be better to hold off on adding more until the game is more polished, but I don’t make the business decisions.

If the December update fixes performance issues and brings back players who were unhappy with the game, they’ll find a new monster to hunt. Capcom announced that the update will reintroduce Gogmazios, a powerful elder dragon not seen since the Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Hopefully, the game will run smoothly so players can enjoy the new content! We’re all hoping for the best.
