On Thursday night, the number of simultaneous players on SteamDB’s Monster Hunter Wilds chart skyrocketed comically, jumping from zero to nearly a million in just two hours. Throughout the rest of the weekend, the player count fluctuated between approximately 600,000 and 1.3 million as hunters took breaks for sleep after their monster-slaying sprees. Monster Hunter enjoyed a highly successful weekend, but smaller games on Steam might have struggled to stay afloat amidst Wilds’ massive wave of popularity.
On Friday, an indie game from longtime Nintendo artist Takaya Imamura launched on Steam to virtually zero notice. Imamura’s credits at Nintendo across a 30+ year career include serving as the art director for Star Fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and the chief designer of F-Zero X. Basically, he’s the guy who drew Star Fox and Captain Falcon as well as the other characters from those two beloved Nintendo series. His art is the star attraction of indie adventure game Omega 6: The Triangle Stars, which landed on Steam with a 40% launch discount and has so far accrued a grand total of five user reviews.
It’s not surprising that Omega 6 might not have attracted 100,000 players over a weekend, given its nature. However, considering the creator of this game also made Star Fox, it could have potentially garnered slightly more interest, perhaps even a tad more, if not for the simultaneous release of Monster Hunter Wilds on the same day.
Japanese indie developer STP Works tweeted as much on Friday. As reported by GamesRadar+ and Automaton, the developer of the Old Coin Pusher Friends series posted that its sales flatlined just as Monster Hunter Wilds released.
Since the release of Monster Hunter, there hasn’t been a single new game sold on Steam, according to STP Works’ statement (as translated by Google). However, it seems like this post is meant in a playful way. The latest Old Coin Pusher Friends game is approximately seven months old, so its sales were likely minimal at the time. But given the enthusiasm of the Japanese Steam community, particularly last weekend, it’s safe to assume they had one primary interest: Monster Hunter.
Conversely, the eccentric cooperative horror game REPO, which debuted on Steam just before Wilds last week, has surprisingly become an early access sensation. Therefore, it appears that defeating Capcom’s monsters in the field is plausible, as long as your game exceeds a specific level of humorously chaotic activities.
