As a dedicated follower of the Malayalam film industry for decades, I have witnessed its highs and lows, its triumphs and tribulations, and its stars rise and fall. In recent times, however, the industry has been grappling with a storm of allegations against some of its most revered figures, and it’s heartening to see Mohanlal, one of its most respected veterans, taking a stand in these trying times.
In response to recent accusations against actors, Mohanlal, together with other key members of AMMA, chose to step down from their roles and dissolve the committee. It appears that Mohanlal sought advice from Mammootty prior to making this decision.
Based on an article by On Manorama, Mohanlal consulted Mammootty for thoughts on his resignation and was advised that it would be wise to go through with it. Nevertheless, it’s also been reported that numerous individuals attempted to persuade the superstar to reconsider his decision, but he remained firm in his stance.
During an online gathering organized by Mohanlal on August 27, 2024, he declared that he was stepping down from his position in the association and dismantling its executive committee. The previous president of AMMA, who is no longer in office, also expressed thanks to those who had criticized industry issues and contributed to improvements.
Furthermore, the official announcement from the association confirms the formation of a fresh committee under new leadership within the next two months. However, some members of the association remain divided about this decision. It’s also been made known that neither Mohanlal nor any of the previous leaders plan to resume their positions.
Following numerous accusations against several members, both a mass resignation and the dissolution of the committee ensued. Initially, General Secretary Siddique faced allegations of sexual misconduct, but other prominent figures like Jayasurya, Mukesh, Baburaj, among others, were also implicated in similar accusations.
In past productions, these actors have been implicated by fellow actresses and lesser-known performers. So far, some complaints have been lodged with the Kerala Police, but ultimately, only time will tell if the accusations hold water or prove to be unfounded.
