The first game from Build A Rocket Boy, titled MindsEye, was met with both critical and commercial failure upon its release. Within just a few days of hitting store shelves, the title found itself on clearance racks at supermarkets, which has left the newly established studio grappling with potential mass layoffs.
In a video chat during an interview, Alex Hernandez, the MindsEye actor portraying the main character Jason Diaz, expressed his own disappointment over the game’s launch. Despite assuring that the studio had been great to work with and the game was progressing well, he clarified that it wasn’t quite ready yet for public release.

During an interview with Check It TV, Hernandez expressed his shared disappointment with fans over the current condition of the new open-world game. Being both an actor and a gaming enthusiast, as well as being the public figurehead for MindsEye, he conveyed that it’s disheartening to witness any project launch in such an incompletely developed state.
The actor expressed a common annoyance, saying, “As both a consumer and a gamer, I share this sentiment: it’s puzzling when a corporation unveils a product that appears to be incomplete.
The problematic launch of Build A Rocket Boy’s debut isn’t the only project Hernandez has been associated with. In fact, the actor was also the main character in another open-world game, Mafia 3, which also suffered from poor performance, numerous bugs, and other issues upon release. Fortunately, Mafia 3 had an exceptional storyline.
Hernandez shared that he “enjoyed himself immensely during the work” and found the team at Build A Rocket Boy to be cooperative and effective. Upon joining the project, which was already several years into development, it appeared to be progressing well. However, unfortunately, the game was launched much sooner than it should have been.
As a devoted fan, I’ve come to realize that perhaps some of the discontent stems from Leslie Benzies’ previous involvement with GTA, especially as the lead behind the epic success of GTA V. It seems that certain players might have had high expectations for the same caliber of quality, but the actor clarified that a fresh studio isn’t in a position to simply “throw money at problems” like Rockstar can.
Regardless, Hernandez maintains that Build A Rocket Boy should not be spared for the initial issues with MindsEye. “It doesn’t matter who you are or how many games you’ve created. If it’s buggy, it’s buggy,” he says.
Hernandez stated, ‘Glitches are undesirable.’ It’s clear that players dislike glitches in their games. If you aim to sell your product, it would be wise to pay heed when people report glitches.
The actor expressed a preference for games to adopt a pattern of holding off on release and ensuring readiness first, rather than launching with flaws and then fixing them afterwards. While high-profile games such as Cyberpunk 2077 can weather such storms, it’s clear that a game like MindsEye wouldn’t be able to implement the same strategy.
Hernandez added, ‘I hope Build A Rocket Boy thrives. The gaming world would benefit, as it might inspire others to think, ‘Look at that success! Games are terrific. Perhaps there will be even more of them.’
