MindsEye, a game released earlier this year, received very negative reviews from both critics and players. Now, people who currently or previously worked at the game’s developer, Build A Rocket Boy (BARB), have issued a strong statement criticizing the studio and its leaders. They accuse the company of treating its employees poorly, demanding excessively long hours, and mishandling recent layoffs.
So, I’ve been following the drama over at MindsEye, and it’s pretty rough. The developers released a statement – they’re working with the IWGB, a workers’ union – basically calling out the studio’s leadership, Mark Gerhard and Leslie Benzies, for how they’ve been treating people and running things. They say around 250 to 300 people have lost their jobs because of bad management, and they’re pointing to the terrible launch of MindsEye as the main reason for all the layoffs. It’s a really sad situation, honestly.

The recent layoffs, according to a statement from the affected workers, stemmed from management consistently ignoring their valuable experience and insights. The statement details several concerns, including a requirement for eight hours of weekly overtime in the four months before the release of MindsEye. Workers also allege they received inaccurate information and incorrect dates in their layoff notices. They concluded by outlining a list of demands.
- A public apology for this mistreatment of employees and proper compensation for laid-off employees;
- The option for remaining employees on redundancy notice to either work their notice period or take Payment in Lieu of Notice (PILON);
- A concerted, meaningful, and documented effort to improve conditions and processes within the company, including the acknowledgement of the IWGB as a trade union;
- A commitment to use official external partners to action any future redundancies and prevent unfair treatment.
When MindsEye didn’t perform well earlier this year, people began to wonder about the atmosphere at Build A Rocket Boy, the game’s developer. It was also the first game published by IO Interactive – the studio known for Hitman – that wasn’t made in-house.
