According to reports, Leslie Benzies’ latest studio, Build A Rocket Boy, has allegedly initiated job cuts after the debut of their cinematic open-world game, MindsEye.
MindsEye developer starts layoffs
Two weeks ago, on June 10, 2025, the game was unveiled, but unfortunately, it debuted as a technical mishap with poor console performance, an abundance of bugs, and frequent crashes. The developer has promised to rectify these issues and enhance the game via post-launch updates, while also outlining a comprehensive plan for future expansions. However, at its release, the game was not in a satisfactory condition.
Due to PlayStation providing refunds for the game and discounted physical copies appearing in supermarkets’ sale sections, it seems that Build A Rocket Boy, the developers of MindsEye, have initiated job cuts within their company.
According to IGN’s report, more than 100 workers at the Scottish game development studio might be let go, including those involved in the production of the game as well as the studio’s Everywhere project.
Approximately 300 staff members, including about 200 who work off-site from locations outside the U.K., are said to be involved in the development of Build A Rocket Boy’s game.
The studio has initiated a 45-day consultation period, which is mandatory in the UK when over 100 employees may be let go within a 90-day timeframe. This is part of the process for handling redundancies (layoffs).
Due to the recent round of job cuts at the studio, there’s some doubt about whether MindsEye will indeed get the promised post-release support as customers were led to believe. Furthermore, it remains unclear how this situation will impact the ongoing progress of Everywhere, the flagship project from Build A Rocket Boy, with MindsEye being just one component of that larger project.
Continued Commitment to MindsEye and Transition to Post-Launch Support Phase
Dear Team,
I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to reassure everyone that our studio remains steadfast in our commitment towards MindsEye. As we move forward, it’s important to understand that we are transitioning from an intensive development and launch phase into a sustainable post-launch support phase.
What this specifically means for our team and the project has yet to be detailed, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as plans unfold. Our focus remains on delivering high-quality experiences and nurturing the growth of MindsEye within this new phase.
Thank you for your continued dedication and hard work, and I look forward to discussing our next steps together.
Best regards,
Mark Gerhard (Co-CEO)
Apart from struggling sales, MindsEye is currently facing a significant crisis due to a minimal number of players simultaneously using the game. The creators intended that as players finish the main storyline, they could enhance their experience with user-created missions made possible by the game’s extensive creation tools. Unfortunately, in the recent two weeks, fewer than three dozen player-made missions have been published on the game’s content browser.
