Millie Bobby Brown, the star of Stranger Things, used her Instagram to respond to comments about her look.
She began her career in the industry at just 10 years old and has essentially grown up in the public eye. Strangely, it seems as though people expect her to remain stuck at that age, as if she should continue looking as she did during the first season of “Stranger Things.” This was expressed in a video she posted on Instagram Monday evening.
Brown was 12 years old when Season 1 of the Netflix series was released in 2016.
In her recent blog entry, the 21-year-old actress mentioned publications that have surfaced in anticipation of the March 14 premiere of her upcoming Netflix movie, “The Electric State,” where she co-stars with Chris Pratt.
The stories she brought up were featured in The Daily Mail. One article carries a title starting with, “Why does Gen Z, including Millie Bobby Brown, seem to be aging poorly?”, while another headline reads, “What cosmetic procedures or changes might Millie Bobby Brown have undergone on her face?”, and the third one is titled, “Millie Bobby Brown is often mistaken for a mother due to her mature appearance as she escorts her younger sister Ava through the crowd in LA.
Still another headline describes Brown as having a a “‘mommy makeover’ look.”
Brown expressed, “This isn’t about journalism; it’s harassment. It’s troubling that grown writers spend their time critiquing my appearance, my decisions, when I am just a young person. The fact that some of these articles are penned by women, makes it even more disheartening.
People who are disillusioned have trouble accepting a girl’s transformation into a self-determined woman, and not one defined by their own standards. I stand firm in my refusal to apologize for maturing. I refuse to compromise myself to meet the unrealistic demands of those who struggle with a girl turning into a self-assured woman.
She concluded her video by asking the media to “do better” for all young women.
That video received 1.2 million likes, and fans and stars alike offered support.
“Enormously proud of you,” penned Sarah Jessica Parker.
Sharon Stone commented, “You’ve expressed it beautifully.” She went on to say that, regardless of age or appearance, it’s important for us to embrace ourselves wholeheartedly and resist the deceptive messages from mainstream media. Well done, my friend. (In a more conversational tone) Sharon Stone thoughtfully wrote, “Wow, you nailed it!” She added that no matter our age or size, we should stand tall and resist the destructive ideas of mainstream media. Great work, pal!
