Miles Teller to Play Italian Cyclist & WWII Hero Gino Bartali in Biopic From Free Solo Directors

Actor Miles Teller has agreed to take the lead role in the upcoming biographical film titled “Bartali,” which will be directed by E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, known for their work on Free Solo.

By the Set Date, Actor Teller is set to portray Gino Bartali, a renowned Italian cyclist who later became a crucial figure in the Italian Resistance during World War II.

Teller expressed great enthusiasm about becoming part of this remarkable venture, aiming to portray the captivating tale of Gino Bartali. He was not merely a cycling great; he was a genuine hero who bravely put himself in harm’s way to aid those most in need. I can hardly wait for viewers to witness the courage and compassion that drove his incredible journey.

Since his role in Top Gun: Maverick, Spiderhead, and The Offer in 2022, Tom Hardy, also known as Teller, has not been seen on the big or small screen. However, fans can look forward to seeing him in several upcoming projects. On Valentine’s Day 2025, his sci-fi horror film titled The Gorge will premiere on Apple TV+. Later this fall, he is set to portray entertainment lawyer John Branca in the Michael Jackson biopic.

What is the Bartali biopic with Miles Teller about?

In the 1930s, Bartali, a globally recognized cyclist, claimed victories in both the Giro d’Italia and Tour de France. However, his competitive cycling career took a pause when he served during World War II. During this period, Bartali was not just a soldier; he became a part of Italy’s underground resistance. His heroic actions included assisting in the transportation of false identification documents and IDs, which ultimately facilitated the escape of hundreds of Jewish individuals facing persecution to Switzerland. Post-war, Bartali resumed his cycling career, striving for one final victory as a champion.

Award-winning filmmakers, Vasarhelyi and Chin, are set to helm the project titled Bartali, based on a screenplay by Karen Tenkhoff. Since their last directorial venture in 2023 with Nyad, this will be their first feature film. The production team includes Vasarhelyi, Chin, Teller, Tenkhoff, and Leslie Holleran.

Upon reading Karen’s script, Vasarhelyi and Chin immediately felt compelled to produce it. The script embodies our passion for storytelling – it revolves around bravery, resilience, and ultimately, the essence of moral fortitude. With Miles set to portray the lead character, we are confident that this grand narrative will uplift, motivate, and inspire viewers with Gino’s incredible tale.

As an enthusiastic film buff, I’m thrilled to share that my project is set to debut at the European Film Market in Berlin! The international distribution will be expertly handled by north.five.six, while CAA Media Finance will take care of the domestic side of things.
