Microsoft to end TV & movie purchases on Xbox and Windows devices

Starting today, Microsoft has decided to stop selling or renting movies and TV shows on their Windows and Xbox platforms. From now on, the option to buy films or shows for temporary or permanent viewing will no longer be an option, but any previously purchased movies (not rentals) can still be watched at your leisure.

This week, Microsoft revealed plans to shut down its movie and TV services, as detailed in a FAQ post on their website. As of July 18, 2025, it will no longer be possible to rent or buy new movies through the Movies & TV app on Xbox and Windows systems. Customers who have previously purchased content from the app can rest assured that they will still have access to their bought media after this date.

By July 18, 2025, I’m excited to share that Microsoft will no longer be selling or renting movies or TV shows. However, don’t worry! You can still enjoy any films you’ve previously purchased and personal videos through the Movies & TV app. Happy streaming!

Microsoft isn’t planning on replacing the services provided by the Movies & TV app, instead encouraging users to explore alternatives like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango. This move appears to be a cost-saving strategy for Microsoft, who recently let go of several thousand employees. It may also assist Microsoft in covering expenses such as the $9.7 billion spent on stock buybacks and dividends for shareholders in Q3 2025.

It appears that watching movies and TV shows purchased or streamed directly on Windows and Xbox platforms is not an option at this time. Keep an eye out for future updates and news regarding Microsoft.
