As a devoted enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see Microsoft, one of tech’s colossal giants, aiming to infuse AI into every product and service it offers, potentially extending this to its gaming division soon. Recently, they’ve shared initial insights about Muse, an innovative AI model designed for brainstorming gameplay concepts.
Katja Hofmann, a senior principal research manager and head of the Microsoft Research Game Intelligence team, recently published a blog post detailing their latest AI project. This project is known within Microsoft as WHAM (World and Human Action Model). The creation of WHAM was done in collaboration with Ninja Theory, the studio recognized for producing the Hellblade series.
As an enthusiast, I’d like to share that Muse, a remarkable tool, is capable of producing game visuals or controller actions. A recent blog post offers various video demonstrations as proof. These captivating clips are all centered around Bleeding Edge, a game developed by Ninja Theory. Each clip showcases nine seconds of content, generated from just one second (10 frames) that was given to the WHAM system. Fascinating, isn’t it?
Hofmann explains that the inspiration behind developing Muse came after the unveiling of ChatGPT towards the end of 2022. This prompted her to ponder, “What are the potential effects of this breakthrough on our team’s work at the crossroads of artificial intelligence and video games?” In conclusion, Microsoft has announced that teams within Xbox Game Studios have started investigating how Muse can be utilized to design AI-driven gaming experiences.
