What is Mickey 17 about?
Mickey 17 hails from the 2022 novel Mickey7 penned by Edward Ashton. The narrative follows Mickey Barnes (portrayed by Pattinson), a character considered replaceable, who is tasked with the mission of establishing a colony on a frozen planet named Nifflheim.
In this novel, Mickey7 serves as an ‘Expendable’: a replaceable worker assigned to a human mission aimed at colonizing the icy planet Niflheim. Whenever a task is excessively risky or potentially fatal, the crew relies on Mickey. After each assignment where he dies, a new body is created with most of his memories still present. By the seventh time this happens, Mickey7 begins to comprehend the conditions of his employment…and why no one else wanted that job when he initially accepted it.
During an ordinary exploration outing, Mickey7 seemingly perishes and is believed to be deceased. However, in a most unexpected turn of events, native life aids him in returning to the colony. By this point, though, the fate of the original Mickey7 has already been decided. In his place emerges Mickey8, ready for Expendable tasks. The notion of multiple Expendables is generally despised, and if discovered, they would likely be discarded into the recycler for nutrients.
“Mickey7 must keep his double a secret from the rest of the colony. Meanwhile, life on Niflheim is getting worse. The atmosphere is unsuitable for humans, food is in short supply, and terraforming is going poorly. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. Ultimately, the survival of both lifeforms will come down to Mickey7.”
In addition to those already mentioned, the film also features Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Holliday Grainger, Angus Imrie, and several others.
Bong Joon-ho is the one who wrote the screenplay for the movie. Previously, he has directed films like “Barking Dogs Never Bite” (2000), “Memories of Murder” (2003), “The Host” (2006), “Mother” (2009), “Snowpiercer” (2013), “Okja” (2017), and the recent release, “Parasite” (2019).
The movie titled Mickey 17 is scheduled for a theater release in the U.S. on January 31, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
