Mickey 17: Robert Pattinson’s Jackass Impressions Were Rejected by Bong Joon-ho

As a fan who has followed Robert Pattinson’s career since his Twilight days, I must say that his acting choices never cease to surprise and entertain me. When I first heard about his unique accent for Mickey 17, I was intrigued and couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of him channeling Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville from Jackass. However, upon reading that Bong Joon-ho vetoed that idea, I can’t help but feel a little relieved. While I love the Jackass duo, I have no doubt that Pattinson will deliver an impressive performance under the direction of such a talented filmmaker.

The distinctive accent of Robert Pattinson in the movie “Mickey 17” sparked conversations among viewers as soon as the film’s trailer was released. Interestingly, the actor himself revealed that his initial concept for the accent was overruled by director Bong Joon-ho.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Robert Pattinson shared that he originally planned to combine the accents of Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville from the Jackass series for his character. But director Bong Joon-ho swiftly dismissed this concept.

Originally, I had planned to imitate Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville from Jackass, he laughs. “Steve-O’s voice particularly catches my fancy. We tried it out during our first reading, and Bong commented, ‘That voice is like nails on a chalkboard.’ I asked, ‘Is that a positive comment?’ He responded, ‘No.’

Instead, Pattinson modeled his voice on the character-inspired style of Ren & Stimpy, a beloved ’90s animated series. “It’s somewhat reminiscent of Stimpy,” explained Pattinson. “When 18 comes in, it’s a bit more like Ren.

What is Mickey 17 about?

In simple terms, the movie titled “Mickey 17” is adapted from the 2022 novel “Mickey7” penned by Edward Ashton. The plot revolves around a character named Mickey Barnes (played by Pattinson), who is considered expendable and is tasked with the mission of colonizing an icy planet known as Nifflheim.

As a gamer, I’d put myself in the shoes of Mickey7, an expendable employee on a daring human expedition to colonize the frigid planet Niflheim. When a mission becomes too perilous or even leans towards suicide, my crew turns to me. After each iteration meets its end, a new body is grown with most of my memories still intact. By the sixth death, I begin to grasp the terms of my employment…and why this unique colonial position was left vacant when I stepped in.

During an ordinary exploration, Mickey7 mysteriously vanishes and is thought to have perished. However, in an unexpected turn of events, he miraculously makes it back to the colony with native lifeforms as his aid. Unfortunately, this event has set into motion a predetermined outcome – Mickey7’s demise. A new clone, Mickey8, steps up for Expendable tasks instead. The concept of multiple Expendables is universally despised, and if discovered, they would likely be discarded into the recycler for protein consumption.

Additionally starring are Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Holliday Grainger, Angus Imrie, among others in this film alongside Pattinson.

Bong Joon-ho is the one who wrote the screenplay for the movie. Previously, he has directed films such as “Barking Dogs Never Bite” (released in 2000), “Memories of Murder” (2003), “The Host” (2006), “Mother” (2009), “Snowpiercer” (2013), “Okja” (2017), and the recent release, “Parasite” (2019).

On January 31, 2025, the movie titled “Mickey 17” will hit theaters across the United States, courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures.
