As a seasoned gamer who grew up playing the legendary Metal Gear Solid series, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and trepidation at Konami’s decision to remake Snake Eater for the newer generation. While I understand the need to introduce this masterpiece to those who missed out on its initial release, I find it hard to shake off the feeling that they’re missing out on something far more profound than just a game.
“Metal Gear Solid, a gaming franchise created by Hideo Kojima and adored by many, may not be as familiar to younger gamers. However, this year, Konami is releasing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which is a remake of the exceptional PlayStation 2 game, explaining why they are choosing to revisit this classic title.
During an interview with Play Magazine, producer Noriaki Okamura stated that many young gamers are not familiar with the Metal Gear Solid series due to its ten-year hiatus following the release of The Phantom Pain and Metal Gear Survive. Although characters like Solid Snake have appeared in games such as Fortnite and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the core series has been largely inactive during this period.
The youths don’t know Metal Gear
According to an interview with GamesRadar, Okamura shared that numerous young gamers missed out on experiencing Metal Gear at its prime. Taking this into account, Konami aimed to reintroduce the series in a grand manner, striving for a top-tier (AAA) production.
One reason we decided to remake it was realizing that many newer, younger gamers aren’t familiar with the Metal Gear series anymore,” Okamura explained. “As for who Solid Snake is, he’s a character from the series.
Long-term enthusiasts of Metal Gear Solid find themselves perplexed by Konami’s choice to remake Snake Eater rather than another installment from the series. Given that it is the earliest event in the original Metal Gear Solid narrative, it serves as an ideal starting point for newcomers to the franchise.
“That’s where the original story started”, Okamura put simply.
Despite some requests for a complete overhaul and remake of the initial Metal Gear Solid, Konami seems quite hesitant due to significant apprehension about revamping the original game, particularly without Hideo Kojima’s involvement.
