As a true crime enthusiast who has delved deep into the darkest corners of human nature, I am thrilled to hear about the second season of Netflix’s anthology series MONSTERS. The story of the Menendez brothers is one that has always intrigued me, and I can’t wait to see how Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan bring this chilling tale to life.
Following the phenomenal reception of DAHMER, Netflix has confirmed the return of the anthology series MONSTERS, with Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan resuming their roles as executive producers for the next installment. This new season will predominantly delve into the chilling story of Erik and Lyle Menendez, who committed a heinous crime in 1989 by murdering their own parents. Preliminary reports suggest that the Menendez brothers portrayed an unknown attacker as responsible for their parents’ deaths to the dispatcher. The series is expected to explore the trial of these perpetrators and shed light on the harrowing history of abuse they experienced during their childhood.
As reported by CBS News, a tragic incident occurred on August 20, 1989, in their Beverly Hills home. Jose and Kitty Menendez were shot, and the perpetrator was none other than their own son, Lyle Menendez. He dialed 911 to report that unknown assailants had killed his parents. Later, the authorities arrived at the crime scene and interrogated the Menendez brothers about the incident.
According to the investigators’ account, Lyle and Erik Menendez claimed they were not at home when the murders occurred. They also stated they found their parents’ deceased bodies upon returning home. At first, police speculated Jose’s death could have been due to business issues; however, their suspicions quickly shifted towards the brothers as potential perpetrators of their parents’ homicides.
According to CBS News, following their parents’ demise, Erik and Lyle Menendez displayed strange behavior, splurging on costly items such as Rolex watches and venturing into businesses. Approximately half a year after the murders, investigators received a lead from the brothers’ therapist, who disclosed that they had admitted to the killings. Furthermore, the therapist mentioned possessing an audio recording of this confession. Upon the Menendez brothers’ arrest, they stood trial, during which their defense argued they acted in self-defense when killing their parents.
Why did brothers Lyle & Erik Menendez kill their parents?
According to what was previously stated, the lawyers for Erik and Lyle Menendez argued that they killed their parents out of self-protection. Additionally, they asserted that they were subjected to abuse by their father throughout their childhood. While testifying, Lyle Menendez disclosed that his parents had sexually abused him. He declared that this sexual abuse started when he was only six years old.
As reported by CBS News, in a court hearing, Lyle stated that his father would touch him inappropriately and ask for reciprocal actions. He also admitted to being raped by his father. Lyle explained that the abuse stopped when he was eight years old, but his father continued to mistreat his brother. When Erik Menendez testified, he declared that the abuse persisted until he turned 18. He remembered telling Lyle about the abuse, hoping his brother might intervene and offer help.
At the court hearing, Lyle disclosed that when they confronted their father about the abuse, they discovered their mother was aware too. Faced with this truth, Lyle warned his parents, threatening to reveal the abuse to the entire family. Yet, the Menendez brothers feared their father would retaliate by killing them. As a result, they made the difficult decision and grabbed the shotguns, shooting their own parents instead.
To support their assertions, some family members testified and shared recollections of discussions they’d had with Erik and Lyle. The prosecution pointed out that if the brothers were indeed victims of abuse, it did not justify them committing murder on their parents. They also suggested that the Menendez brothers could be fabricating stories to receive a less severe sentence.
Following multiple witness statements, the jury pondered over their decision for several weeks without coming to an agreement on a verdict. Consequently, the judge ruled it as a hung jury, as reported by CBS News. In October 1995, the second trial commenced, and the jury convicted them of first-degree murder. Subsequently, the court sentenced them to life imprisonment without the chance of ever being released.
The upcoming Netflix series titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” is set to delve further into the intriguing case, uncovering shocking facts. Starring Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny as Jose and Kitty Menendez, respectively, the show also features Nicholas Alexander Chavez portraying Lyle Menendez and Cooper Koch playing Erik Menendez. The series is scheduled to debut on Netflix on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
