According to recent reports, multiple members of a US figure skating team were aboard American Airlines Flight 5342, which collided with a US Army Black Hawk helicopter in the sky over the Potomac River, near Washington D.C., on January 29, 2025. The mid-air collision resulted in an explosion that was filmed by cameras, depicting both the aircraft plummeting into the water below.

The crash involving a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter on January 29 also included some individuals from a U.S. figure skating team, as stated in an article by People Magazine.

The flight that departed from Wichita, Kansas carried a total of 64 people (60 passengers and four crew members), which included several figure skaters as confirmed by the US Figure Skating Association. Sadly, they were among those on American Airlines Flight 5342 that collided with a helicopter on January 29, 2025, in Washington, D.C. These individuals were returning home from the National Development Camp held alongside the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.

The organization expressed they were deeply saddened by the event and vowed to monitor it closely. Moreover, The Guardian revealed that approximately 14 figure skaters were involved in the report, which included the Russian pair Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who are part of the Boston Skating Club, along with their mothers.

An army helicopter carrying three soldiers crashed close to Reagan National Airport around 8:47 p.m. Eastern Time, as seen on live video footage recorded at the Kennedy Center. A rescue operation is underway currently. By Thursday morning, according to CBS News, approximately 19 bodies have been found in the river with no reported survivors.
