Recently, director Prem Kumar of Meiyazhagan was seen at the Indian Screenwriters Conference. In his conversation with fellow filmmakers, he expressed concerns about a significant issue facing Tamil cinema: an overwhelming number of unfavorable reviews.
Prem Kumar on negative reviews harming Tamil cinema
At the gathering, the director of Meiyazhagan expressed concern, stating, “Critical assessments in Tamil film industry are posing a significant challenge for us. This issue is growing steadily larger with each passing day.
Originally, we were surrounded by individuals who served as reviewers. However, the ones currently present… I wouldn’t call them reviewers. They have their own objectives, and in my opinion, they lack civility. The manner in which they communicate, their approach is extremely negative, and they are focusing on undermining the initial week’s earnings.
Premkumar pointed out that a significant majority, about 90%, of online critics in Tamil cinema are actually paid for their reviews. The remaining 10%, who supposedly provide honest opinions, often lack the skill or ability to offer a thorough and accurate critique of a movie.
The director emphasized that just a handful of people truly appreciate the art of critically analyzing a movie, and these individuals will form a distinct fan base. On the other hand, the general public will primarily be exposed to unfavorable opinions during this period.
Prem Kumar stated, “This significantly influences the film industry as many viewers make decisions about whether to watch a movie or not based on unfavorable reviews. In my opinion, this is a major issue that our Tamil region grapples with.
Prem Kumar’s latest movie
Director Premkumar recently brought a film titled Meiyazhagan to the silver screen, featuring Karthi and Arvind Swamy in pivotal roles. This movie chronicles the story of a man in middle age who goes back to his hometown after an absence of 22 years, spurred by the loss of his ancestral property.
As I felt jittery about my impending return, I was joined by a familiar face from my past, assuring me he knew me well. That night, we embarked on a lengthy sojourn filled with rekindling connections and shared reminiscences. This heartwarming story unfolds as an ode to brotherhood and relationships.
The movie garnered positive reviews from critics, who commended both its storyline and acting, yet faced some backlash on YouTube due to its length.
Moving forward, director Prem Kumar is poised to lead the production of the film titled 96: Part 2. This upcoming movie will serve as a continuation of the 2018 release, 96, with Vijay Sethupathi and Trisha Krishnan set to return in their original roles.
