Meghan Trainor soundtracks The Perfect Couple's catchy opening dance sequence

As a connoisseur of television and a devoted fan of catchy theme songs, I must say that Netflix’s The Perfect Couple has truly hit the nail on the head with their approach to opening titles. In an era where even the most memorable shows often eschew theme songs in favor of minimalist title sequences, it’s refreshing to see a series that not only has a theme song but also makes excellent use of it.

Nowadays, it’s uncommon to find television shows that have catchy theme songs or distinctive opening sequences. Often, we only see the show’s title briefly on screen accompanied by an instrumental tune. Sometimes, the title merely appears as the episode begins or after a brief introductory scene. Regrettably, the days of theme songs featuring cast members and their names are largely behind us

In a different yet clear way: Netflix’s show “The Perfect Couple” gets one thing spot on, and that is using a theme song and an extended opening title sequence. The Grammy Award-winning artist Meghan Trainor‘s track “Criminals,” from her 2024 album “Timeless” deluxe edition, serves as the limited series’ theme song across all six episodes. This tune plays a significant role in the cast’s dance scene

As per Netflix’s Tudum, executive producer Gail Berman – who had previously produced the Emmy-nominated hit series Wednesday – is credited with creating the opening title sequence. With her background in a dance number that became popular online, she conceived the idea of having the cast from The Perfect Couple perform a dance to “Criminals”, thereby establishing a playful and mysterious tone for the murder mystery

Originally planned as a disturbing scene for episode 5, technical issues led the creative team to adapt, resulting in the dance number being used as the opening instead. Given that episode 5 is already brimming with standout moments like Tag’s personal musical performance, it was wisely decided not to add another major spectacle to the penultimate episode to avoid overcrowding

Jenna Lamia, the producer and writer of the show, explained to Tudum that the dance scene was intended to add a touch of humor to the series and to signal that this isn’t your typical suspenseful limited series. The characters, while dancing cheerfully to an upbeat pop tune with lyrics like “‘Anything that feels this good, well, it must be illegal,’” and other lighthearted references to crime, give off a guilty appearance

Here’s how Lamia explains the “Criminals” dance number:

Susanne [Brier, the director] had this really brilliant thought that if we were to use a dance like that as the opening credits, it would tell people right away that, yes, this is a murder mystery, and yes, it’s a thriller, but you’re also going to have so much fun, so sit back and enjoy the ride. It’s really important, I think, that people realize the tone of the show is not The Undoing, or something that Susanne has done before; this is a fun murder mystery. Sure, somebody’s going to be dead, but you’re also going to laugh.

Megahnn Fahy, the actress who portrays Merritt Monaco in “The Perfect Couple”, expressed her eagerness for viewers to watch the opening sequence of the show. She also shared that despite initial nerves, everyone ended up enjoying it tremendously, which is clearly visible on screen! This Emmy-nominated star from “The White Lotus” added a touch of excitement to the production process as well

At first glance, the debut dance sequence might take you aback. You don’t typically associate a limited series like this one with such an unexpected opening or theme music (or indeed any music at all). Moreover, it’s surprising that the opening plays before each episode. However, this delightful surprise stays with you as you binge-watch, and trust me, once you hear that catchy tune, it may just linger in your mind for quite some time!

In August 2024, Trainor unveiled the single “Criminals,” accompanied by extra tracks as part of the deluxe edition of her sixth album, Timeless. Originally released in June, the album underwent changes, and “Criminals” was initially intended for her third album Treat Myself, originally planned for release in 2018. However, due to delays, the album wasn’t released until January 2020 without “Criminals” on its tracklist. Trainor collaborated with Tyler Johnson and Josh Kear to write “Criminals,” and her brother Justin produced the 2024 version of the song
