Meet singer, the voice behind iconic Tere Bina song from Guru, was banned and is going viral again for Thug Life’s Muththa Mazhai

Chinmayi Sripada has once again captured attention, following her captivating performance at the Thug Life pre-release event in Chennai. She enchanted audiences with her rendition of Muththa Mazhai and immediately won their hearts. Yet, her comeback has ignited debates online, as many questioned why she had been absent from Tamil cinema for such a prolonged period. To start off, let’s familiarize ourselves with who she is.

Who is Chinmayi?

Chinmayi gained notice when she provided vocals for actress Sameera Reddy in the 2008 film Surya s/o Krishnan. She also drew attention with her dubbing work on the character Jessie in Ye Maaya Chesave. Although she is well-known for her work as a voice artist, her career encompasses much more than just voicing roles.

Growing up in a family with a love for music, she started learning classical tunes as a child. Her mother, an accomplished musician herself, played a crucial part in laying the groundwork for Chinmayi’s musical journey. After years of dedicated practice, her big break came at 15 when AR Rahman offered her a playback chance. She sang “Oru Dheivam Thanta Poove” for Kannathil Muthamittal, marking the beginning of her successful career in music.

She has sung songs in all four Southern Indian languages, including Tulu, as well as Hindi. Some of her most notable Bollywood hits are “Tere Bina” from Guru and “Titli” from Chennai Express. Having been brought up in Chennai, she learned Telugu at school and has a deep affinity for the language. Chinmayi also cherishes ghazals and Sufi tunes.

Who is Chinmayi married to?

Initially just friends, Chinmayi and Rahul Ravindran eventually got married on May 5th, 2014. Fast forward to June 18th, 2022, they welcomed twin babies into their lives – a son named Driptah and a daughter called Sharvas. Excited about their new roles as parents, Chinmayi announced the joyous news on Instagram, along with heartwarming photos of the twins gripping their parents’ hands.

Why was Chinmayi banned?

In November 2018, Chinmayi was dismissed from the South Indian Cine, Television Artistes and Dubbing Artistes Union (SICTADAU) following her public endorsement of two women who accused union president Radha Ravi of inappropriate behavior. According to The News Minute, this action occurred not long after she supported the victims during a period when questions about his influence over the committee were already being raised.

During approximately the same timeframe, she also accused well-known lyricist Vairamuthu of sexual harassment. The singer from Mayya disclosed that an event organizer in Switzerland had demanded her to comply with him during a program. After these allegations, Chinmayi experienced negative impacts on her career.

As a devoted fan, I’ve learned about instances where my favorite singer missed out on several dubbing projects. In many cases, she had nearly secured a role in a project, but at the last minute, she was unexpectedly dropped. Following the 2018 film ’96’, she only lent her voice for one Tamil film, ‘Hero (2019)’. Interestingly, it’s said that even this opportunity came about because her participation became public knowledge right before the movie’s release.

Chinmayi goes viral after Thug Life event

At the Thug Life event, Chinmayi showcased her unique take on “Muththa Mazhai,” a song originally performed by Dhee in the movie. The music for this film was created by AR Rahman, with Siva Ananth writing the lyrics. Notably, several lead actors from the film attended the event, including Kamal Haasan, Abhirami, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan. Since then, her performance has gained significant popularity online, resulting in the release of a separate clip to meet the public’s interest.
