Remarkably, her mother had Irish ancestry. The family later moved to Madras (currently Chennai), where Amala spent her childhood alongside her brother and sister.

Rajendar saw potential in me, not just as an actress, but also as a dancer with exceptional Bharatanatyam skills. And so, in 1986, I made my debut in the captivating Tamil film, Mythili Yennai Kadali, directed by none other than T. Rajendar himself.

While Amala’s first movie brought her some acclaim, it was her role in Velaikaran from 1987 that truly catapulted her to fame, sharing screen time with the renowned Rajinikanth. In the same year, Amala also made her entrance into the Telugu film industry, featuring in a comedy titled Pushpaka Vimana.
